Wong Tai Sin District (黃大仙區) is one of the 18 districts in Hong Kong, falls within the Kowloon East[1] and Kowloon Central[2] boundaries for the Legislative Council geographical constituency election.
Located in the north-eastern part of Kowloon East, Wong Tai Sin District covers an area of about 926 hectares and is named after the famous Wong Tai Sin Temple in Hong Kong. Bounded by the Lion Rock and Tate's Cairn in the north, Fei Ngo Shan in the east, New Clear Water Bay Road and Prince Edward Road East in the south, and Junction Road and the Lion Rock Tunnel in the west, Wong Tai Sin District is the only district in Hong Kong that does not have a coastline.
History[]
Wong Tai Sin is situated to the north of Boundary Street, which used to be a part of the New Territories. In 1937, it was incorporated into the New Kowloon area and was called Chuk Yuen, which was sparsely populated before the Second World War, and its residents were mainly farmers. During the civil war, there was an influx of immigrants into Hong Kong. Geographically, Wong Tai Sin was close to the urban area and became a place for immigrants to live, with wooden huts and other simple houses. To solve the squatter problem, the government started building public housing in the 1950s, with the first resettlement area in the district located at Lo Fu Ngam (now Lok Fu Estate after redevelopment), replacing the hillside squatter area.
Choi Hung Estate, which was occupied in 1962, was the first permanent public housing estate in the area, and Choi Wan Estate and other estates were also occupied in the 1970s. Subsequently, the Government embarked on the Resettlement Area Redevelopment Programme, and new housing estates such as Upper and Lower Wong Tai Sin Estates, Lok Fu Estate and Tsz Wan Shan were occupied from the 1980s onwards, while a number of public housing estates, including Home Ownership Scheme (HOS) and Private Sector Participation Scheme (PSPS) estates, were completed one after the other.
San Po Kong, located in the south-eastern part of Wong Tai Sin District, is one of the industrial areas in Kowloon and was formed in the 1960s. In recent years, in line with the Government's "Energising Kowloon East" initiative, San Po Kong has been transformed into a high-value-added industrial area for the development of logistics and commerce, alongside the Kowloon Bay and Kwun Tong business districts.
Today, Wong Tai Sin District is predominantly a public housing estate with 86.2% of the population living in the district. Famous tourist attractions such as Wong Tai Sin Temple (next to MTR Wong Tai Sin Station), Chi Lin Nunnery and Nan Lian Garden (next to MTR Diamond Hill Station) attract many tourists to Wong Tai Sin District.
Street/road structures[]
Wong Tai Sin is a predominantly public housing area with few major streets, bounded on the west by Junction Road (although Lok Fu Estate is west of Junction Road, this part of the district belongs to Wong Tai Sin) and Chuk Yuen Road, and to the east of the exit of the Lion Rock Tunnel, and to the south by Clear Water Bay Road, New Clear Water Bay Road, Prince Edward Road East and Tung Tau Tsuen Road, etc.
Lung Cheung Road, which forms part of Route 7, runs through Wong Tai Sin District. Most bus routes from the New Territories to Kowloon East pass through this section of Lung Cheung Road in Wong Tai Sin District. Five major roads - Chuk Yuen Road, Tung Tau Tsuen Road, Fung Mo Street Flyover, Po Kong Village Road and Hammer Hill Road - connect the housing estates in the area. Fung Mo Street Flyover straddles Lung Cheung Road and connects Lok Fu to Chuk Yuen in the Ma Chai Hang area, while Choi Hung Road is one of the major streets in the area, connecting San Po Kong to Choi Hung Estate.
The Tate's Cairn Tunnel, which forms part of Route 2, has its Kowloon portal at Diamond Hill and connects to the Kwun Tong Bypass. A number of bus routes run directly from New Territories East to Hong Kong Island via the Tate's Cairn Tunnel and the Eastern Harbour Crossing.
