The public transport terminus beneath Site 8 in Whampoa Gardens (黃埔花園第八期下面的公共交通總站[Remark 1][Remark 2])[2], also named as Whampoa Garden Public Transport Interchange (黃埔花園公共運輸交匯處[Remark 3][Remark 4], Citybus Location Code WHG, whereas KMB and LWB Location Code 黃埔) is located at G/F Whampoa Plaza (Gourmet Place, The Whampoa), Whampoa Garden Phase 8, 7 Tak On Street, Hung Hom, Kowloon City District, Kowloon. It is a parallel platform bus terminus, with a GMB terminus situated beside it; the entrance for franchised buses is located at Tak On Street and the exit at Tak Hong Street.
Besides, there are two free shuttle bus routes for The Whampoa - Ho Man Tin Route and Chun Seen Mei Route, which terminates at Tak Ting Street beside the entrance to the minibus terminus and at Shung King Street near The Whampoa respectively, providing convenience for the shoppers living in Ho Man Tin and To Kwa Wan.
History[]
Formerly known as Whampoa Dockyard, established in 1863, it was one of the largest dry-docking, ship-repairing and shipbuilding companies in the Far East. On 14 December 1984, Whampoa Dockyard signed a land exchange with the Hong Kong Government to terminate its shipbuilding and ship-repairing business, and the original site was converted into a large-scale private housing estate, "Whampoa Garden". With an investment of HK$4 billion in the project, Hung Hom was transformed into a new city with schools, shopping malls, a bus terminal and other ancillary facilities.
The earliest bus route serving Whampoa Garden residents was KMB Route 8A, which was extended to Whampoa Garden on 8 June 1987, with the bus terminus located at the roadside bus terminus opposite Phase 5 Oak Mansions off Tak On Street. In November of the same year, Route 12A was extended from Kowloon City Ferry to Whampoa Garden, with the terminus located at Tak On Street near Phase 11 Bauhinia Court, to tie in with the opening of Hung Hom Road, and in February 1989, Route 30X was launched, with the terminus located in front of Route 8A.
Half a year later, Whampoa Garden Phase 8 "Whampoa Plaza" was completed in August, and the bus terminus on the ground floor was opened on 18 November 1990[3], with all the above bus routes originally terminating on-street moving into the area on 25 November.
GMB operator Chit Fai Motors (CFM) had always been based in Whampoa Garden. Routes 2 and 6 were extended to Whampoa Garden on 18 December 1987, with the terminus initially located at the secondary road near Hung Hom Road in Phase 2 (around the ground floor of Block 8 of Cherry Mansions), and then relocated to the permanent public transport interchange under Whampoa Plaza in November 1990 together with the franchised bus routes.
In addition, three free shuttle bus routes are provided by The Whampoa (黃埔天地, named "黃埔新天地" in Chinese before 2018), a large shopping mall, to and from Ho Man Tin, To Kwa Wan and Chun Seen Mei Chuen. Customers who make purchases at any of the shops in The Whampoa and present their receipts at the Customer Service Counter to redeem a travel voucher will be entitled to a free ride on the shuttle buses. In response to a complaint about the illegal resident/free shuttle buses at Whampoa Garden, Chit Fai Motors wrote to the Office of The Ombudsman in 1999 to complain against the Transport Department. The Ombudsman pointed out that the Transport Department was ‘weak and ineffective in investigating the complaint’. As the problem was still serious, the Ombudsman wrote to the Complaints Division of the Legislative Council Secretariat in 2001. [4]
In conjunction with the commissioning of the Whampoa Station of the MTR Kwun Tong Line Extension, GMB Route 2M commenced service on 23 October 2016 with this stop being its terminus. Due to manpower shortage, the service of the route has been suspended since 5 July 2018 and was permanently discontinued on 23 December of the same year.
Chit Fai Motors, which has stood in Whampoa Garden for more than 30 years, suddenly announced on 9 April 2020 that it would terminate the service of four GMB routes from the following day. After co-ordination with the Transport Department (TD), another GMB operator, Kellis, temporarily took over the operation of Routes 2 and 2A from 12 April, with the initial service hours shortened to daily, while Routes6 and 6X ceased to operate on 12 April, and TD has not considered re-tendering and selecting a new operator for the routes.
