West Kowloon Highway (西九龍公路), formerly known as West Kowloon Expressway (西九龍快速公路)[2], is a 4-kilometre-long road connecting Tsing Kwai Highway and the Western Harbour Crossing, and is part of Route 3.
West Kowloon Expressway is positioned as an expressway with a speed limit of 100 kilometres per hour. Vehicles can only travel to and from various districts in Kowloon from the Yau Ma Tei Interchange and the Lai Wan Interchange at either end of the highway, while the rest of the traffic has to use the parallel connecting roads. In addition, the section of Yau Ma Tei Interchange falls within the management area of the Western Harbour Crossing and cannot be classified as an expressway, thus making the 600-metre section of the Highway the non-expressway with the most lenient speed limit in Hong Kong.
History[]
The West Kowloon Highway, part of the Hong Kong Airport Core Programme[3], was opened on 20 February 1997[1] as one of the trunk roads to and from the new airport to the urban area (along with the Lantau Link and Tsing Kwai Highway).
The highway has three lanes in each direction, with the northern section elevated from Mei Foo to Olympic Station and passing over Nam Cheong Station, the southern section from Olympic Station to the Western Harbour Crossing Toll Plaza at ground level, and the Lantau Airport Railway tracks underneath the viaduct and to the east of the at-grade road.
The entire section of West Kowloon Highway between Yau Ma Tei Interchange and Lai Wan Interchange has no exit and motorists have to use Lin Cheung Road to go to Sham Shui Po and Tai Kok Tsui areas. Lin Cheung Road runs parallel to the highway and separates the two to the north of Yau Ma Tei Interchange. In addition, the West Kowloon Highway has long been reserved for a connection at the Lai Wan Interchange, and a slip road has now been built to connect to the Stonecutters Bridge. For travelling to and from Sha Tin via Tsing Sha Highway, one has to use Lin Cheung Road or make a detour via the Kwai Chung Container Terminals.
The West Kowloon Highway is separated from Mei Foo Sun Chuen by a 150-metre landscaped buffer as planned; to meet the standard, 3-metre high noise barriers have been erected to reduce the noise impact on Mei Foo Sun Chuen.

- 18 October 2003: At around 1:00 p.m., a Wan Chai (Exhibition Centre)-bound KMB Route 961 Volvo Olympian (AV253/HH9138) overturned after crashing into the central divider curb opposite Olympian City II, causing serious damage to the front of the vehicle and injuring 37 people. - 4 March 2019: At about 10:30 am, a medium goods vehicle was stopped in the left two lanes with the tailgate open due to a broken down vehicle near the interchange of Sorrento and Yau Ma Tei. During this period, a Citybus Enviro500 MMC (6359/UC6127) travelling on Route 967 towards Admiralty (West) was suspected to have failed to retract its brakes and crashed into the goods vehicle. The front end of the bus involved in the incident was severely damaged, the bus driver was thrown out of the vehicle with his chair and died at the scene, and the driver of the goods vehicle died of his injuries at the hospital, while 15 other passengers of the bus and a female passenger of the goods vehicle, totalling 16, were injured[6][7].
