Wan Chai District (灣仔區) is one of the 18 districts of Hong Kong, is centrally located on the north coast of Hong Kong Island, with the smallest population of all the districts, and in the Legislative Council Constituency, it falls within the Hong Kong Island East area.

History[]

Wan Chai, formerly known as Ha Wan, was one of the "Four Wans and Nine Districts", and has been a place of Chinese settlement since 1843, with the British and other foreigners living in Central, and in the 1874 Tongzhi edition of the "Map of Guangdong" compiled by Gui Wenchan, Kwan Tai Lo was marked as Sheung Wan, the Central District, and Ha Wan. In the 1866 Xin'an County Map, the location of "Kwan Tai Lo" was also close to the present site of Wan Chai.

Today, Wan Chai is an area of considerable population movement, with a residential population of just over 100,000 and a commuter population of 600,000 travelling to work and school every day. As a residential, commercial, shopping and entertainment area, and with its proximity to the central business district of Central and the large shopping area of Causeway Bay, Wan Chai has a high transport demand. The area is served by the MTR, buses, minibuses, trams and ferries. The area is also home to a number of skyscrapers and landmarks, such as the Central Plaza and the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, making it a major tourist attraction for visitors to Hong Kong.

For decades, the eastern part of Causeway Bay between Victoria Park and the MTR Tin Hau Station was under the jurisdiction of the Eastern District Council. On 22 October 2013, the Government introduced the District Councils Ordinance (Amendment of Schedules 1 and 3) Order 2013 into the Legislative Council, proposing to adjust the boundaries of the Eastern and Wan Chai Districts with effect from the fifth term of the District Council by transferring the Tin Hau (C16) and Victoria Park (C18) Constituency Areas to Wan Chai District[1]. The amendments were passed by the Legislative Council on 22 January 2014 and subsequently came into effect on 1 January 2016[2].
