History[]
Before Tung Chung was developed into a new town, the present location of Tung Chung West used to be the lower reaches of the Tung Chung River, a deserted area with only Sheung Ling Pei Village, Ha Ling Pei Village and Tung Chung Battery in the vicinity.
In the 1980s, when the Hong Kong International Airport was relocated from Kai Tak to Chek Lap Kok, part of the neighbouring Tung Chung area was incorporated into the Tung Chung New Town, one of the ten major infrastructure projects under the Airport Core Programme, which also included part of the present Tung Chung West area. The new town was developed on reclaimed land to the north-east of Ma Wan Chung and on land formed by the artificial diversion of the lower reaches of the Tung Chung River. The original residents of Chek Lap Kok have been rehoused in the newly built Chek Lap Kok New Village in Tung Chung West.
In early 2001, the 13-block Yat Tung (i) Estate became the first Tung Chung West development to be completed with the occupation of Yat Tung (ii) Estate, and the Yat Tung Estate Temporary Bus Terminus on Yu Tung Road eastbound became the first bus terminus in Tung Chung West. With the occupation of Yat Tung (ii) Estate commencing in 2004, the permanent bus terminus at Yat Tung Estate was opened to replace the original temporary bus terminus.
On 24 September 2013, the North Lantau Hospital in Tung Chung West commenced operation as the first public hospital in Tung Chung. On 30 September 2013, the Tung Chung General Out-patient Clinic (GOPC), which was originally located in the centre of Tung Chung, was relocated to the North Lantau Community Health Centre on the third floor of the new hospital to continue to provide services. [1]
In recent years, the Government has begun to study the development of the whole of Lantau, with Tung Chung playing an important role in connecting the island with the rest of the world, which undoubtedly includes Tung Chung town centre. on 3 June 2017, the Government announced the Blueprint for a Sustainable Lantau [2]. The Blueprint states that according to the Tung Chung New Town Extension Study, the hill between Tung Chung West and Tung Chung Town Centre will be developed into a "Tung Chung Town Park".
