Tung Chung Town Centre [1] (東涌市中心) is located in the central part of Tung Chung in the Islands District of the New Territories, and belongs to the first phase of Tung Chung New Town, with Chek Lap Kok to the west, Tung Chung West and Ma Wan Chung to the south, and Tung Chung North to the north.

Tung Chung Town Centre extends from the North Lantau Highway to the north of the North Lantau Hospital. It is now the economic core of Tung Chung, with a high concentration of shopping, leisure and entertainment facilities, and has become an important transport hub for the region, the Hong Kong International Airport, and South Lantau to the outside.

History[]

Before Tung Chung was developed into a new town, the current Tung Chung Town Centre used to be located in a part of Tung Chung Bay, and the core of Tung Chung's economy at that time was located in the "Tung Chung Town", which is now known as Ma Wan Chung.

In the 1980s, when the Hong Kong International Airport began to plan for the relocation of the airport from Kai Tak to Chek Lap Kok, Tung Chung and its neighbouring areas were included in the "Tung Chung New Town", which was one of the ten major infrastructure projects under the Airport Core Programme (ACP), and served as a new town in support of the airport's development. The new town was developed on reclaimed land to the north-east of Ma Wan Chung and on land formed by the artificial diversion of the lower reaches of the Tung Chung River. The first phase of the development, which commenced in 1994 and was completed in January 1997, included the residential developments of Fu Tung Estate, Yu Tung Court and [Tung Chung Crescent]] in the centre of Tung Chung, as well as the Tung Chung Fire Station, which is a community facility.

The development of the new town was marked by the opening of a number of bus termini, including the Tung Chung Town Centre and the Tung Chung MTR Station, while the centre of gravity of development and the economic core of Tung Chung slowly shifted from Ma Wan Chung to the present Tung Chung Town Centre.

Apart from housing, various community facilities to serve the residents of the new town started to operate in Tung Chung town centre, and on 14 August 1997, the Tung Chung General Out-patient Clinic opened on the ground floor of the Tung Chung Health Centre at 6 Fu Tung Street, Tung Chung town centre, to provide primary health care services for the public, replacing the Tung Chung Ambulatory Care Centre, which had ceased to provide such services from the same date. [2] The school, fire station and police station were similarly completed in mid-1997. [3]

On 30 September 2013, the Tung Chung General Out-patient Clinic was relocated to continue providing services at the North Lantau Community Health Centre on the third floor of the North Lantau Hospital in Tung Chung West to coincide with the opening of Tung Chung's first public hospital six days earlier. [4]

In recent years, the Government has begun to study the development of the whole of Lantau, with Tung Chung playing an important role in connecting the island with the rest of the world, which undoubtedly includes Tung Chung town centre. on 3 June 2017, the Government announced the Blueprint for a Sustainable Lantau [5]. The Blueprint states that according to the Tung Chung New Town Extension Study, the hill between Tung Chung Town Centre and Tung Chung West will be developed into a "Tung Chung Town Park".

Road Structure[]

The road network of Tung Chung town centre mainly consists of two roads running through it, namely Shun Tung Road and Tat Tung Road. Most of the roads in the area are for two-way traffic, with some exceptions, for example, the section of Tat Tung Road to the east of the junction with Mei Tung Street is for clockwise traffic only.

According to TD's observation, although the pick-up/drop-off points opposite Tung Chung Station are relatively busy during peak hours, the roads in Tung Chung town centre, Chek Lap Kok South Road and the roads on the Airport Island are all smoothly trafficked. [6]

Bus Stops[]

At present, there are a number of franchised buses North Lantau External Routes plying between Tung Chung town centre, the Airport Island and various districts in Hong Kong to cater for the daily needs of the public.
