The Tung Chung Station Bus Terminus (東涌站巴士總站, Citybus Location Code TUC, whereas KMB and LWB Location Code 東涌) [1] is located at G/F, Citygate Outlets, 20 Tat Tung Road, Tung Chung Town Centre, Area 14, Tung Chung, Islands District, New Territories, adjacent to MTR Tung Chung Station and Tung Chung Cable Car Terminal. It is a large indoor sawtooth bus terminus with a central parking area.
As the transport hub of Lantau Island, a number of bus routes to and from North and South Lantau originate and terminate at the Tung Chung Station Bus Terminus, making it convenient for the public to travel to and from the urban areas by MTR or North Lantau External Routes.
Starting from 23 July 2018, when the Routes S52 series and S56 Stop Announcement System announces this stop, the screen displays " Tung Chung Station , Tung Chung Cable Car Terminal" (東涌站 、東涌纜車站).
History[]
Tung Chung New Town is one of the ten core projects of the Airport Core Programme, with the first public housing estate, Fu Tung Estate, and the first Home Ownership Scheme (HOS) flat, Yu Tung Court, occupied in 1997. During the initial development of the new town, bus routes terminated at the Tung Chung Town Centre Bus Terminus.
The opening of the Hong Kong International Airport on 22 June 1998 coincided with the opening of the Tung Chung MTR Station Bus Terminus (東涌地鐵站巴士總站) [2] at the base of Citygate Phase 1 [3]. The new stop is located just a stone's throw away from the Town Centre Terminus, both of which are public transport facilities ancillary to Tung Chung Station. Since then, routes to the Airport and Yat Tung Estate mainly use this stop, while routes to and from all parts of Lantau Island drop off and pick up passengers at the Tung Chung Town Centre Bus Terminus, which shares a common entrance/exit with Tat Tung Road.
When the bus terminus was first commissioned, both Citybus and LWB referred to it as "Tung Chung MTR Station Bus Terminus" (東涌地鐵站巴士總站). After the rail merger, Citybus and LWB changed the name of the bus terminus to "Tung Chung Station" (東涌站) and "Tung Chung Railway Station Bus Terminus" (東涌鐵路站巴士總站) respectively. In late August 2017, LWB removed the word "railway" from the name of the bus terminus and renamed it as "Tung Chung Station Bus Terminus", which is similar to the naming of the bus terminus by Citybus.
Mei Tung Street new entrance[]
- The main article of this section is Tung Chung Town Centre Bus Terminus#Rezoning of bus terminus into commercial use.
In 2012, the Government released the site of the Tung Chung Town Centre Terminus for commercial development and awarded it to a consortium of Citygate developers - Swire, Henderson, SHKP, New World and Hang Lung - through a competitive tender process to form an extension to Citygate's retail outlets. During the construction of the mall, the Tung Chung Town Centre Terminus had to be decommissioned and reprovisioned at an alternative location. As the Tung Chung Station Bus Terminus and the Tung Chung Town Centre Bus Terminus originally shared an entrance at Tat Tung Road, which will be incorporated into the site boundary, the developer will need to construct an alternative entrance at Mei Tung Street for the former in order for the construction of the mall to commence.
The developer commenced works in 2014 to convert the turnaround adjacent to Mei Tung Street into a new entrance for the station. The new entrance opened at 10:00 a.m. on 20 April 2015[4][5] and all buses entering and leaving the station were diverted to Mei Tung Street.
After the opening of the new entrance/exit at Mei Tung Street, Citybus' signage next to the platforms of Route S1 refers to this station as "Tung Chung Town Centre Bus Terminus" (東涌市中心總站).
Extension part[]
The Citygate Outlets extension project was progressing well and was topped out in May 2018. It was initially planned that the temporary bus terminus would be relocated back to the original location of the Tung Chung Town Centre Bus Terminus [6]. According to the project plan, the layout of the covered bus terminus on the ground floor of the shopping centre is no different from that before 2015, with one side continuing to be used as a sawtooth bus terminus and the other remaining as a pit coach stop, and 24-hour pedestrian access will be provided. [7]
In a written reply to LegCo on 9 January 2019, the Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Edward Yau, stated that the relevant departments of the Hong Kong Government were actively processing the acceptance procedures for the new public transport interchange on the ground floor of the Citygate Extension, i.e. the new public transport interchange converted from the original Tung Chung Town Centre Bus Terminus, so as to provide a number of additional bus pick-up and drop-off spaces for use by franchised buses [8]. TD considered that the existing bus terminus facilities in the vicinity of the Tung Chung Town Centre were inadequate to meet passenger demand and decided to retain the Tung Chung Temporary Bus Terminus for continued use by New Lantao Bus (NLB) routes, while Routes 1R and 23, which mainly serve tourists, as well as Routes 34 and 36, which have a relatively low patronage, would remain at the terminus. [9]
After years of construction, the Citygate Outlets extension opened in the first quarter of 2019 and the new bus terminus is scheduled to open on 27 April 2019, initially under the name of "Tung Chung Town Centre Bus Terminus"; Tung Chung West and Tung Chung North routes, and some South Lantau routes relocated to the Tung Chung Temporary Terminus during the works period were relocated to the terminus; NLB Route B6 towards Mun Tung Estate was also diverted to stop at the terminus, replacing the intermediate stop at Tung Chung Station [10]. All routes using this stop were diverted to use Tat Tung Road in and out of the terminus.
After more than eight months of full operation, the Transport Department gazetted the terminus as a bus terminus at Tung Chung Station on 24 January 2020, with NLB following immediately [11]. One year later, the non-franchised bus portion next to the drop-off point was scheduled to be commissioned on 5 April 2020 [12][13] to accommodate Routes NR05 and NR06 relocated from Fu Tung Street; and the drop-off point of staff shuttle buses commissioned by Kwoon Chung Bus between Tung Chung Station and Cathay Pacific Cargo Terminal was relocated to the non-franchised bus portion of the Tung Chung Station Bus Terminus.

Stop Layout[]
The Tung Chung Station Bus Terminus is located on the ground floor of Citygate, and is a large-scale indoor bus terminal with a sawtooth-shaped design, with ten pick-up/drop-off bays at the edges and a parking area in the centre during its initial days of opening.
In the past, the Tung Chung Station Bus Terminus and the adjacent Tung Chung Town Centre Bus Terminus shared the same vehicular entrance and exit at Tat Tung Road. Upon commencement of the redevelopment of the Tung Chung Town Centre Bus Terminus, the original entrance was included in the site boundary and closed, and a separate entrance was provided at Mei Tung Street. In addition to the footpath next to the vehicular entrance at Mei Tung Street, pedestrians can also use the pedestrian walkway next to the stop of Route S1 for travelling between the MTR Tung Chung Station and the entrance of the Citygate Outlets.
Upon re-commissioning of the Tung Chung Town Centre Terminus, ten pick-up/drop-off spaces were provided, while the number of pick-up/drop-off spaces at the Tung Chung Station Bus Terminus were reduced by three to the remaining seven due to the closure of the Mei Tung Street entrance/exit. [14]
