The Tung Chung Old Pier Bus Terminus (東涌舊碼頭巴士總站) is located at the car park next to Tung Chung Public Pier (Kaito Ferry Pier) at the northern end of Tung Chung Road North, Ma Wan Chung, Tung Chung, Lantau Island, formerly known as Tung Chung Bus Terminus (東涌巴士總站), while the electronic destination sign refers to it as Tung Chung Pier (Ma Wan Chung) (東涌碼頭(馬灣涌)), which is a stop with a long history, but it has now been abandoned, and the original stop has been occupied by private cars.

History[]

Tung Chung was a fishing village before the Airport Core Programme projects, and Tung Chung Road was the only vehicular access on Lantau Island; access to places outside Lantau was only by sea. The Tung Chung Pier at Ma Wan Chung, built in the Tung Chung Bay, was suitable for the berthing of vessels and used to be served by ferry routes to and from Tai O and Castle Peak, thus becoming the centre of external transport for Tung Chung residents.

As Mui Wo was the most developed place on Lantau Island before the completion of the Tung Chung New Town, with the most important ferry pier on the island, there was still a demand for travelling to and from Mui Wo even though Tung Chung's population was small. With the establishment of New Lantao Bus in 1973, the island's bus routes were reorganised and franchised, and franchised bus services began to operate in Tung Chung. NLB Route 3 served as the only route between Tung Chung and Mui Wo via the sometimes treacherous Tung Chung Road. [1]

The year 1997 marked a turning point in the history of Tung Chung's development - with the completion of the Tung Chung New Town and the opening of the Tung Chung Line of the Mass Transit Railway (MTR), the Tung Chung Development Pier on the new reclamation took over the position of the Tung Chung Pier for external marine traffic, and the original Tung Chung Pier became the "Tung Chung Old Pier". Both the bus routes passing through the area and the old Tung Chung Pier could hardly cope with the development of Tung Chung New Town and gradually declined. The Tung Chung Old Pier became a public pier used only by kaito. NLB Routes 3 and 31 were replaced by Route 3M special trips to the old Tung Chung Pier and Route 11 respectively. NLB Route 34 used to pass through Tung Chung Old Ferry Pier, but it has not been detoured since 2007, and the special trips of Route 11 to Tung Chung Old Ferry Pier was cancelled shortly afterwards.

On 16 July 2010, the special trips of NLB Route 3M via Tung Chung Old Ferry Pier was cancelled and replaced by special trips via Chung Yan Road, thus making this terminus a history.
