Tung Chung North (東涌北) is located in the northern part of Tung Chung in the Islands District of the New Territories, within the development area of Tung Chung New Town, and is bounded by Tung Chung East in the east and Tung Chung Town Centre in the south.

Tung Chung North extends from the Ferry Pier in the west, along the reclaimed land north of the North Lantau Highway to Ying Tung Estate [1]. Although Tung Chung North is not located in the city centre, it is in close proximity to each other, and some of Tung Chung's major community facilities are also located in Tung Chung North, such as the Tung Chung Municipal Services Building (which houses the Tung Chung Community Hall, the Tung Chung Public Library, and the Tung Chung Man Tung Road Sports Centre), the Tung Chung North Park, and the Tung Chung Development Pier.

The Government often refers to this area as "Tung Chung (N)" (東涌(北)).

History[]

Before Tung Chung was developed into a new town, the present location of Tung Chung North used to be part of the Urmston Road, which was navigable only by vessels.

In the 1980s, the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) was relocated from Kai Tak to Chek Lap Kok, and part of the neighbouring Tung Chung was incorporated into the Tung Chung New Town, one of the ten major infrastructure projects under the Airport Core Programme (ACP). Phase I was substantially completed in 1997, and the Tung Chung Development Pier, situated on the coast in the northwest of the new town, was put into service immediately with a bus terminus. It was the first piece of infrastructure to be commissioned in Tung Chung North, and replaced the Tung Chung Public Pier as the focal point for Tung Chung's external ferry services.

In mid-1996, the Planning Department completed a Territorial Development Strategy Review, which confirmed the need to increase the development potential of Tung Chung to meet Hong Kong's long-term housing demand. As a result, the Tung Chung Development Phase 3A was proposed in 1998 to reclaim a total of 26 hectares of land in Tung Chung Areas 51, 52 and 53-56 for housing to accommodate about 10,000 people [2]. The reclamation works for the Phase 3A development commenced in March 1999 and were completed in April 2003. A number of residential developments in Tung Chung North, including Seaview Crescent, Caribbean Coast and Coastal Skyline, have since sprung up. Bus companies have also started to arrange regular bus routes to detour via Tung Chung North to provide bus services for new residents in the area.

The Ying Tung Estate, which was occupied in March 2018, is the first public housing project to be completed in Tung Chung North, and the bus terminus attached to the estate was the first to come into service from 1 January 2017 onwards.

As Tung Chung New Town continues to develop, the Government released the draft Tung Chung New Town Extension Outline Zoning Plan in January 2016, which states that the focus of future development in Tung Chung North will shift from Tung Chung North to Tung Chung East, which is further to the east.

Road Structures[]

All roads in Tung Chung North are two-way, and the road structure therein mainly consists of five major roads running horizontally and horizontally through Tung Chung East, namely Yi Tung Road, Ying Hei Road, Man Tung Road, Wai Tung Road and Tung Chung Waterfront Road.

All vehicles travelling in and out of Tung Chung North have to use Yi Tung Road or Tung Chung Waterfront Road, and most of the bus routes serving Tung Chung North also pass through Man Tung Road, which is located in the heart of Tung Chung North, and have stops.
