The Tuen Mun Chek Lap Kok Tunnel BBI (屯門赤鱲角隧道轉車站) is a pair of closed interchange stops on the northbound and southbound lanes, located at Pillar Point, Tuen Mun District, New Territories, near the site of the original toll plaza of the Tuen Mun Chek Lap Kok Tunnel Road:

  • The southbound stop (Coordinates: 22.3689N, 113.9490E; location see map: Show the location of the site described in this article using OpenStreetMap Show the location of the site described in this article using Google Maps) is located above Lung Mun Road;
  • The northbound stop (Coordinates: 22.3687N, 113.9477E; location see map: Show the location of the site described in this article using OpenStreetMap Show the location of the site described in this article using Google Maps) is located opposite to the AECOM Tuen Mun-Chek Lap Kok Link site office.

When the Long Win Bus (LWB) LWB bus stop announcement system broadcasts this stop, as the space of old model of stop reporter lacks space for displaying the entire stop name, therefore only "TUEN MUN CHEK LA" and "TUNNEL INTERCHAN" is displayed.

History[]

In 2007, the Government decided to construct the Tuen Mun - Chek Lap Kok Link (TM-CLKL), which connects Pillar Point in Tuen Mun District in the New Territories with Tai Ho in Islands District (connecting with the North Lantau Highway), with a toll plaza and a bus interchange at the Tuen Mun Entrance/Exit.

The plan includes diverting daytime Airbus routes (or airport bus routes, i.e. "A" Routes) and overnight Airbus routes ( or Overnight Airport Bus Routes, i.e. "NA" routes) from the Northwest New Territories to and from the airport via the Link Road; and arranging for the daytime North Lantau external routes (i.e. "E" Routes) and overnight routes (i.e. "N" Routes) from the Northwest New Territories to divert via the Link Road and Shun Long Road, so that they can continue to provide bus services mainly to/from Tung Chung and the Airport Logistics Area and to make use of the bus interchanges near the Tuen Mun portal of the Link road tunnel to provide Octopus  interchange concessions. [1]

In mid-2020, the Tuen Mun - Chek Lap Kok Tunnel Link was substantially completed. In October of the same year, the road was gazetted as Tuen Mun Chek Lap Kok Tunnel Road, and in November, it was announced that it would open to traffic at 8:00 a.m. on 27 December, with the existing LWB routes A33, A33X, E33, E33P and NA33 diverted to run via the road on the following day, as well as the commencement of the new route A34, this interchange was opened at the same time.

The vacant land next to the interchange is the original location of the toll booth. The Government proposed in the 2019 Policy Address to exempt the tolls of two new uncompleted tunnels (Tuen Mun - Chek Lap Kok Tunnel and Tseung Kwan O - Lam Tin Tunnel) from toll collection, and therefore demolished the facilities of the toll booths that had already been constructed. To optimise the use of unused land, the Government has earmarked part of the land formerly used as toll booths in April 2020 for use as franchised bus depots and parking in the short to medium term. [2] KMB then invited tenders for the construction of an all-electric bus depot facility on the site in November of the same year. [3]

The site in front of the Tuen Mun Tunnel Administration Building was the first to be commissioned on 10 September 2021 and is named "Depot A", which is currently used for parking a number of new unlicensed buses of KMB and LWB, while the site opposite to the Lantau-bound interchange is also demarcated for parking and is named "Depot C". [4]

Facilities[]

Both the northbound and southbound interchanges are equipped with toilets and footbridges connected by staircases and lifts. The interchange is of a closed design with no access to the Pillar Point area at ground level, which can accessible by MTR Bus Routes K52 or K52A, and a security guard booth at the end of the southbound station to prevent unauthorised walking along the kerb-side to and from the interchange.
