Hong Kong Buses Wiki

Tsuen Wan Town Centre (荃灣市中心), also known as the "Old Tsuen Wan", extends from Castle Peak Road - Tsuen Wan in the north to Yeung Uk Road in the south, Tai Chung Road in the west and Texaco Road in the east.

Public light buses (PLBs) ply the streets of Tsuen Wan Town Centre, with a minibus terminus at almost every street.

History[]

Tsuen Wan has a long history and was a fishing village before World War II. During the Chinese Civil War, there was an influx of immigrants from the Mainland into Hong Kong, and most of the residents residing in Tsuen Wan clustered around the seven streets in the old district at that time, namely Yeung Uk Road, Sha Tsui Road, Tai Ho Road, Sai Lau Street, Ho Pui Street, San Tsuen Street and Wo Tik Street. In the 1950s, Tsuen Wan Town Centre began to develop, and apart from the old-fashioned residential buildings (commonly known as tenement buildings), industries also emerged at that time, with a number of factory buildings clustered in the eastern part of the district, resembling a satellite city.

With the rapid development of Tsuen Wan Town Centre, which extended to Chung On Street and Tsuen Wan Market Street in the 1970s, the residents had a strong demand for public transport services, but the franchised bus services at that time were not sufficient to meet the needs of the residents, so public light buses were introduced. Even though the Government implemented a policy of limiting the number of public light buses in 1973, it did not stop the expansion of public light buses in Tsuen Wan. Over the years, there has been an increase in the number of public light bus routes connecting to public housing estates in the area, such as Shek Lei Estate, Kwai Chung Estate (also known as Tsuen Wan New District in those days), Cheung Shan Estate, etc.[1] All red minibus routes terminating in Tsuen Wan terminate at streets in the town centre, while the Yuen Jor Route routinely passes through the Tsuen Wan Town Centre, and a number of green minibus routes have been introduced to the town centre in different decades.

Buildings in the area were gradually being renewed, with the old buildings across the seven streets being demolished and rebuilt into today's Vision City with the sole parallel minibus terminus in the district built there. The former Swire Coca-Cola factory has now been rebuilt into today's Chelsea Court, while Indihome is also situated within the Yeung Uk Road Industrial Area.

Notes and references[]

  1. By that time, Kwai Chung was still within the boundaries of Tsuen Wan District, which was until 1985 when the Kwai Tsing District Council was established, but the area north of Sheung Kwai Chung Village and northern Tai Wo Hau still belonged to Tsuen Wan District. The boundaries of these two districts are formed by Texaco Road, Castle Peak Road - Kwai Chung, Cheung Wing Road and Wo Yi Hop Road.
  2. Texaco Road is the boundary between Tsuen Wan District and Kwai Tsing District, with the area around East Asia Gardens belonging to Tai Wo Hau and Texaco Road North belonging to Shek Wai Kok Estate in Tsuen Wan East.
