Tsuen Wan District (荃灣區) is one of the 18 districts in Hong Kong, is located in the south-west of the New Territories, and is within the south-west New Territories in the Legislative Council constituency.
History[]
Tsuen Wan, Tsing Yi and Kwai Chung have developed rapidly since then. Tsuen Wan's original coastline was Sha Tsui Road, with Chai Wan Kok and a large portion of land to the west designated as industrial areas, and residential areas to the east of Tai Chung Road; reclamation works in 1976 extended the coastline to include Texaco Road and Yeung Uk Road.
In 1981, Tsuen Wan was grouped with Kwai Chung and Tsing Yi as one administrative district. It was not until the establishment of the Kwai Tsing District Council on 1 April 1985 that Kwai Chung and Tsing Yi were separated from Tsuen Wan, with the Tsing Yi North Bridge, Texaco Road, Castle Peak Road - Kwai Chung, Cheong Wing Road, and Wo Yi Hop Road, Lei Muk Shue and Kwok Shui Road belonging to Tsuen Wan District, and Tai Wo Hau Estate belonging to Kwai Tsing District.
In the 1990s, Tsuen Wan became an important transport hub connecting the urban areas with the New Territories, benefiting from the Airport Core Programme and the construction of the KCR West Rail. Today, the area of Tsuen Wan New Town within Tsuen Wan District extends from Lei Muk Shue in the east to Bayview Garden in the west and Riviera Gardens in the south, and Tsuen Wan Countryside, which includes Ma Wan and the Tsing Chau Tsai Peninsula in northeast Lantau Island, and reaches as far as the Disneyland (Penny's Bay), Tsing Lung Tau, Shing Mun Reservoir and Chuen Lung.
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of Tsuen Wan New Town, Yuen Yuen Institute sponsored the "Yuen Yuen Golden Jubilee Fireworks Display", which was held at 8:30pm on 16 September 2011 at the Tsuen Wan Waterfront Promenade opposite the Rambler Channel, attracting more than 40,000 people. Street/road structure[]
The residential area of Tsuen Wan Town Centre (south of Castle Peak Road - Tsuen Wan, from Tai Chung Road to Luen Yan Street/Kwan Mun Hau Street) was built in the 1970s and the road surface is narrower than that of other new towns, the only streets that franchised buses pass through are Sha Tsui Road, Tai Ho Road, Yeung Uk Road, Tai Chung Road, Luen Yan Street/Kwan Mun Hau Street, but there are green minibus and resident bus routes on Chung On Street, Tsuen Wan Market Street, Ho Pui Street, Chuen Lung Street and other streets and are quite busy.
The Tsuen Wan Industrial Area is in the eastern part of Tsuen Wan town centre on both sides of Yeung Uk Road, while the Chai Wan Kok Industrial Area is a later development area to the west of Tai Chung Road.
While most of the streets north of Castle Peak Road (from Tsuen Wan Station to Lei Muk Shue) are two-way, Tsuen King Circuit between Tsuen Wan Adventist Hospital and Allway Gardens is one-way only.
The section of Castle Peak Road - Tsuen Wan was originally the only major trunk road in the western part of Tsuen Wan, but with the opening of Hoi On Road, the load on Castle Peak Road opposite Belvedere Garden has been greatly reduced.
Major external roads in Tsuen Wan include Tsuen Wan Road (Route 5), Tuen Mun Road (Route 9), Shing Mun Tunnels (Route 9), Castle Peak Road, Route Twisk, etc.; the Ting Kau Bridge is also located in Tsuen Wan. Access to Ma Wan and North Lantau from Tsuen Wan is via the Tsing Ma Bridge, which can be accessed from the Tsing Yi North Bridge via the Tam Kon Shan Interchange and the Tsing Yi North Coastal Road, while some of the Airport and North Lantau franchised bus routes pass through Tsing Yi Road West.
