Tsing Yi Town Centre (青衣市中心), or Tsing Yi Town (青衣市) for short, refers to the central part of the east coast of Tsing Yi Island in Kwai Tsing District, where public and private residential, commercial and industrial and municipal facilities are concentrated, and which also serves as a hub for sea and land transport in the district.
Tsing Yi Town Centre is defined in the narrow sense as the area bounded by Tsing Tsuen Bridge, Fung Shue Wo Road and the Rambler Channel waterfront; in the broader sense, it also includes the villages along Fung Shue Wo Road, the Cheung Wan (長環) Industrial Area between Tsing Yi Ferry and Tsing Yi South Bridge, and the residential area to the north of Tsing Tsuen Road.
History[]
Tsing Yi Island was a rural area in the early years and was not accessible by road until 1974. The present site of Tsing Yi town centre was also a village in those days, with Lam Tin (藍田), Tai Wong Ha (大王下), San Uk (新屋) and Yim Tin Kok (鹽田角) villages, and the Tsing Yi Market (or Tsing Yi Main Street, in the vicinity of the present-day Tsing Yi Garden) was also situated in the area, and it was one of the few markets that were open every day. The area around Yee Yip House, Yee Kui House and Tai Wong Ha Tsuen of the present Tsing Yi Estate, which was still a water area, was designated as the "Tsing Yi Bay Typhoon Shelter" in 1958 and was completed in 1961 to rehouse the boat dwellers affected by the development of Tsuen Wan; a plywood factory was located at the site of Blocks 1-3 of the present Tsing Yi Garden, and there were also other heavy industry factories such as a lime factory in the vicinity, which were located in the area of the Tsing Yi Town and Cheung Wan (with the site of the factory in the area of the present Tsing Yi Interchange under the bridge).
In 1977, the Government built Cheung Ching Estate at the foot of the hill south of Tsing Yi Tong, and the population in the area gradually expanded. In the same year, the Government formally resumed the land of the villages in the vicinity of Tsing Yi Tong for the development of Tsuen Wan New Town Extension, and the Tsing Yi Market was formally demolished in August 1982, after redevelopment. After redevelopment, the streets and buildings in the former market have long been destroyed and the surrounding villages have been relocated to the west and south of Fung Shue Wo Road.
Street/road structure[]
The Tsing Yi Town Centre is served by Fung Shue Wo Road and Tsing King Road, while the residential area of the town centre is served by Tsing Luk Street and Tsing Yip Street. Tsing Yi Heung Sze Wui Road connects the town centre residential area, Cheung Wan Industrial Area, Cheung Ching Estate and Tsing Yi South Bridge.
There is a Tsing Yi Interchange at the junction of Tsing Yi Heung Sze Wui Road, Tsing Yi South Bridge and Tsing Yi Road, and a Tam Kon Shan Interchange to the north of the town centre, which is the junction of Tsing Tsuen Bridge, Tsing King Road, Tam Kon Shan Road, Fung Shue Wo Road and Tsing Yi North Coastal Road.
