Tsing Tsuen Road (青荃路), which opened on 11 December 1987, is a two-way east-west road linking Tsing Yi North and Tsuen Wan, most of which is a flyover, and which can be independently called Tsing Tsuen Bridge, commonly known as Tsing Yi North Bridge.
The section of this road east of the centre of Rambler Channel forms the boundary between Tsuen Wan and Kwai Tsing districts.
History[]
In 1980, the British Hong Kong Government commissioned a consultancy study on the construction of a second flyover across the northern end of the Rambler Channel, and in 1983, the Territory Development Department awarded a contract for the construction of the second elevated road, which included reclamation works on the northern side of Tsing Yi to merge Cheung On Estate with Nga Ying Chau. The project contract, worth HK$200 million, included reclamation works in the northern part of Tsing Yi to merge Tsing Yi Island with Nga Ying Chau, with Cheung On Estate, Cheung Fat Estate, Ching Nga Court, Ching Tai Court, Tsing On Temporary Housing Area, Tsing Fat Temporary Housing Area, etc. in the reclamation area, and a location in the Rambler Channel was reserved for reclamation and the construction of facilities such as the MTR Tsing Yi Station and the Tsing Yi Promenade after the completion of the bridge.[2] The related works commenced immediately, with the bridge officially named "Tsing Tsuen Bridge" and the road portion officially named "Tsing Tsuen Road" (青荃路), and is commonly known as "Tsing Yi North Bridge" (青衣北橋) as it is located to the north of the Tsing Yi Bridge.
After more than four years of construction, Governor Sir David Wilson officiated at the opening ceremony at the entrance of Gin Drinkers Bay in Tsuen Wan on 10 December 1987, and Tsing Tsuen Road was opened to traffic at 5:00 p.m. on the following day.[3] The first two bus routes via Tsing Tsuen Bridge, 41M and 43B, were introduced on 15 February 1988, while Route 41A operated via Tsing Tsuen Bridge for the first two years until 1990 when it was diverted to Kwai Tsing Road. Routes 41, 44 and 44M were diverted to Tsing Tsuen Bridge during the reconstruction of the Tsing Yi Bridge in 1989, but after the completion of the project only the latter resumed using the Tsing Yi South Bridge, while the former two were permanently diverted.
On 1 February 2002, the Tsing Yi North Coastal Road was opened to traffic, connecting directly with the Tsing Tsuen Bridge and the Lantau Link, making it more convenient for vehicles travelling to and from Lantau Island as well as Tsing Yi and Tsuen Wan.
