The Ting Kau Bridge (汀九橋) spans the Rambler Channel and connects Ting Kau in Tsuen Wan District with the north-west of Tsing Yi Island in Kwai Tsing District and forms part of Route 3, Tsing Long Highway and Tsing Ma Control Area.

Currently, Ting Kau Bridge is one of the longest three-tower cable-stayed bridges in the world.

History[]

Construction of the Ting Kau Bridge, an essential link between the Tai Lam Tunnel and the Tsing Yi section of Route 3, commenced in August 1994 and was originally scheduled for completion by the end of June 1997. Completion of the bridge was expected in April 1998 due to unforeseen delays in the construction of the cable-stayed Ting Kau Bridge as a result of engineering problems.[1]

After 44 months of design and construction, the Ting Kau Bridge was opened to traffic on 6 May 1998[2], connecting the Northwest New Territories with the Lantau Link and the new airport at Chek Lap Kok, as well as relieving the congestion on Tuen Mun Road and facilitating the movement of traffic between the Northwest New Territories and the urban areas of Hong Kong and Kowloon.

Upon the opening of the Country Park Section of Route 3 on 25 May 1998, some bus routes in Yuen Long and Tin Shui Wai were diverted to travel to Kowloon and Hong Kong Island via the Tai Lam Tunnel and Ting Kau Bridge.[3]

Structure[]

Ting Kau Bridge is a 1,177-metre long cable-stayed bridge with three single-pillar towers connected to the bridge body, named Ting Kau Pagoda, Central Pagoda and Tsing Yi Pagoda respectively. The two main spans of the bridge are 448 metres and 475 metres long respectively, while the cable-stayed bridge and its approach spans are 1,875 metres long.

The bridge has a dual three-lane carriageway with two slip roads connecting to the Ting Kau Interchange at the northern end and two traffic lanes each connecting to the westbound carriageway of Tuen Mun Road, and a 500-metre-long dual three-lane elevated approach across Tuen Mun Road to connect to the Tai Lam Tunnel, and connecting to the Tsing Yi Northwest Interchange at the southern end to provide vehicular access to the urban areas of Tsing Yi, Lantau Island, or urban areas of Hong Kong and Kowloon.

Strong Wind Management Measures[]

Ting Kau Bridge, Kap Shui Mun Bridge and Tsing Ma Bridge are also part of the Tsing Ma Control Area. Traffic control will be implemented whenever there are strong winds and partial or full closure of Ting Kau Bridge is required.

  1. If the hourly average wind speed exceeds 40 kilometres per hour, buses and motorcycles which are susceptible to being blown over by the wind are not allowed to use the Ting Kau Bridge and have to use Tuen Mun Road, Tsuen Wan Road or other roads to travel to and from their destinations;
  2. If the average hourly wind speed exceeds 65 kilometres per hour, the Ting Kau Bridge will be completely closed and all vehicles, including buses, will have to be diverted to Tuen Mun Road, Tsuen Wan Road and other roads for travelling to and from their destinations.
