Hong Kong Buses Wiki

Tai Po Road - Tai Wo (大埔公路-大窩段) is one of the sections of Tai Po Road which starts from Lam Kam Road Interchange in the north and ends at Po Nga Road, Tai Wo Estate in the south, and is currently the northern section of Tai Po Road.

As one end of Tai Po Road - Tai Wo is adjacent to Tai Wo Estate (太和邨) and MTR Tai Wo Station (太和站), in addition to the fact that the name "Tai Wo" is both used as English names for "太和" and "大窩" in Chinese, therefore many have mistaken its Chinese name as "大埔公路 – 太和段".[1]

History[]

Tai Po Road - Tai Wo is a section of Tai Po Road which once served as the principal thoroughfare connecting the North District to the urban areas. In 1968, Tai Po Road was subdivided into several sections, with the section between 37-milestone[Remark 1] and the Kowloon-Canton Railway Bridge at Shui Wai, Tai Po Tau designated as the "Tai Wo" section.[2]

The Tai Wo section originally connected to the Fanling section to the north. However, the section north of Wai Tau Tsuen was upgraded to an expressway and renamed Fanling Highway, with Tai Wo Service Road West constructed as an access route for the village. The Fanling Section was further subdivided into Fanling Highway, Jockey Club Road, Sha Tau Kok Road - Lung Yeuk Tau and San Wan Road.

As for the southern end of the Tai Wo section, it originally connected to Kwong Fuk Road (formerly Tai Po Main Street). However, in the mid-1980s, due to the development of Tai Po New Town, the section of Kwong Fuk Road north of Lam Tsuen River was largely demolished and no longer connected to the Tai Wo section with its function being replaced by the newly constructed Tai Po Tai Wo Road. Since then, the Tai Wo section has become an isolated section of Tai Po Road.

Remarks[]

  1. At that time, milestones were counted from the southern end of Nathan Road, through Nathan Road, Castle Peak Road and Tai Po Road, totalling 52½ miles in clockwise direction. However, Nathan Road was later excluded from the calculation, so the 3-milestone at Castle Peak Road was generally used as the starting point.
