Tai Po Road – Ma Liu Shui (大埔公路-馬料水段) is a section of Tai Po Road connecting to the Tai Po Road - Tai Po Kau in the north and extending to the Tai Po Road - Sha Tin in the south.

KMB has prefixed all bus stops along Tai Po Road with TA21.

History[]

Tai Po Road was subdivided into several sections in 1968, with the segment between 44- and 45-milestone[Remark 1] designated as the "Ma Liu Shui" section.[1] Mile Marker 45 is situated between the junction of Chung Chi College and Lai Ping Road, connecting to the Tai Po Road - Ho Tung Lau Section to the south.

In response to the development of the Sha Tin New Town, the existing Ho Tung Lau section in the Fo Tan area (present-day Lok King Street and Lok Shun Path) proved inadequate to handle traffic volumes. Consequently, the authorities constructed a new section of Tai Po Road on reclaimed land to its east, which subsequently opened to traffic on 15 June 1978.[2] On 19 June 1981, the authorities proposed gazetting this newly constructed section of Tai Po Road as the Sha Tin Section, while the Ho Tung Road section at Kau To Shan was reclassified as part of the "Ma Liu Shui" section[3] and was implemented on 18 December of the same year.[4] Consequently, the Ho Tung Lau section was divided between the Sha Tin and Ma Liu Shui sections, with the latter directly adjoining the former, demarcated by a boundary 120 metres southwest of Kau To Shan Road.

Tai Po Road - Ma Liu Shui once served as the primary arterial route connecting Tai Po District and North District to the urban area. However, following the opening of Tolo Highway in 1985, it was superseded in this role. Presently, its users predominantly comprise residents of nearby villages (such as Chek Nai Ping Village) and students commuting to and from the vicinity of The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Remarks[]

  1. At that time, milestones were counted from the southern end of Nathan Road, through Nathan Road, Castle Peak Road and Tai Po Road, totalling 52½ miles in clockwise direction. However, Nathan Road was later excluded from the calculation, so the 3-milestone at Castle Peak Road was generally used as the starting point.
