Tai Ho Road (大河道[Remark 1][Remark 2]) is a road in Tsuen Wan Town Centre, Tsuen Wan District, New Territories, that serves as the hub of the district. It starts from Sai Lau Kok Road in the north and ending at the end outside the Tsuen Wan Ferry Pier in the south, intersecting with Yeung Uk Road, Sha Tsui Road and Castle Peak Road - Tsuen Wan in the middle, with an extended section named Tai Ho Road North connecting with Cheung Pei Shan Road and Route Twisk via a flyover in the north at the Tsuen Kam Interchange.
History[]
Tai Ho Road, as its Chinese name suggests, used to be a river, but was converted into a culvert in the early 1960s to cope with the population growth in Tsuen Wan, and the road was gazetted on 23 November 1962 and named.[2]
Over the years, Tai Ho Road has undergone a number of alterations, including the reconstruction of the new pier at Tsuen Wan Ferry Pier and the bus terminus in the 1970s and 1980s, the opening of the extension of Tai Ho Road - Tai Ho Road North in 1984, and the construction of the Tsuen Wan West Station in 2000.[3][4]
On 26 October 2003, a section of the southbound road south of Nina Tower was designated as a franchised bus lane.[5]
Usage situation[]
Tai Ho Road is an essential route for access to and from the Tsuen Wan West Station Bus Terminus, Nina Tower Bus Terminus, Hoi Kwai Road Minibus Terminus and Tsuen Wan (Vision City), and is therefore served by a number of public transport routes, with two of the bus termini having stops alongside Tai Ho Road. The decommissioned Tsuen Wan Ferry Bus Terminus (1st generation) and Tsuen Wan Ferry Pier Bus Terminus (2nd generation) are also connected to this road.
The section between Sha Tsui Road and Castle Peak Road - Tsuen Wan is served by a pair of two-way franchised bus en-route stops directly named "Tai Ho Road".
The section south of the bus terminus at Tsuen Wan West Station is an end loop and is not used by public transport routes; KMB routes 234A and 234B to Tsuen Wan West Station pass through the whole section of Tai Ho Road except for this small section.
