History[]
The new logo adopted by Sun Bus from 2020 onwards [1]
In 1998, the KMB Group established Sun Bus Company Limited to expand into the non-franchised bus market. Sun Bus has acquired a number of non-franchised bus and cross-boundary bus service operators in just a few years, and is now one of the major non-franchised bus operators in Hong Kong, with a fleet of 386 buses as at the end of 2016, in addition to being the preferred estate bus operator for a number of housing estates under its parent company, Sun Hung Kai Properties.[2]
Sun Bus launched a new double-decker open-top bus rental service in January 2016 to cater for sightseeing, weddings, parties and commercial promotions. From April, Sun Bus took the lead in providing Estimtaed Time of Arrival System on Resident Bus Route NR956, the first non-franchised bus operator in Hong Kong to provide such service.
In August 2020, Sun Bus started to adopt a newly designed logo, which is similar to that of KMB and LWB, both of which are subsidiaries of Transport International.

Open Top Sun Bus[]
Sun Bus entered the open-top bus market in 2015 by introducing two Dennis Trident double-decker buses (ATR356/HN2195; ATR357/HN3158), which were retired due to reaching the upper age limit of franchised buses and were originally introduced by LWB, from its sister company KMB.
Both buses were officially delivered to Sun Bus on 21 December 2015, with HN3158 carrying passengers on 28 December 2015 for tour service. Initially presented with an all-white body, it was later framed with hand-painted graphics of Hong Kong's tourist attractions in early March 2016 and packaged as "Open Top Sun Bus", the bodywork was drawn by Flyingpig, a local illustrator who is also a family member of KMB staff.[3] The Open Top Sun Bus is mainly used as a charter bus for tour groups, but also accepts public hire.
Sun Bus announced on 23 May 2018 that it would stop accepting open-top buses for hire from 15 June of the same year.[4]
Related incidents[]
- 31 August 2019: A bus enthusiast joyriding group "Prawncracker Bus Tours" organised the Sun Bus Neoplan Centroliner (KR6160) bus joyride, which was stopped at Hung Lung Hang for the participants to film the bus, was surrounded and detained by the Police in 11 police vehicles for two and a half hours for questioning and detention of the bus and the participants. They were not given a reason for their detention and were finally asked to leave the area in an impolite manner.[5]
- 27 December 2019: A Neoplan Centroliner (KR6768) overturned at KMB Lai Chi Kok Depot, with no one injured or trapped.[6][7][8] As the vehicle would soon reach the retirement deadline for Euro III diesel non-franchised buses, it was not repaired and was retired early.[9]
- 12 October 2020: A Neoplan Centroliner (KR6160) hit a staff member while reversing at Lai Chi Kok Depot, and Police officers attended the scene. According to preliminary information, the driver of the vehicle and the injured were both directors of Sun Bus and the injured had to be sent to hospital for treatment. [10]
