Stanley Fort (赤柱炮台, Citybus Location Code SFO) Bus Terminus, also known as Stanley Fort (Gate) (SFG)[Remark 1], is located at 160 Wong Ma Kok Road, Stanley, Southern District, Hong Kong Island, outside the roundabout exit of Stanley Barracks Main Gate. It is the southernmost bus terminus in Hong Kong.
It is only 100 metres away from the next bus stop "Che Pau Teng", surrounded by closed area, construction sites and hillside, the vicinity is deserted with low patronage, and basic facilities such as regulator's room and toilets are also lacking. At present, there is only one whole-day and two peak-hour bus routes terminating at this stop.
History[]
Stanley Fort was originally a British garrison battery opened in 1937 to strengthen Hong Kong's defence capability. During the British rule, the Stanley Fort bus terminus was located next to the car park in the Stanley Barracks. As the barracks was a restricted area, all passengers (except members of the British Forces Hong Kong) had to alight at the main entrance and the buses would turn around at the terminus.
After the handover of Hong Kong's sovereignty in 1997, Stanley Fort came under the jurisdiction of the Hong Kong Garrison of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), and the barracks remained a restricted area, where bus captains with permits could drive buses in and out of the barracks. 27 August 2001 saw the opening of the roundabout outside the Stanley Barracks entrance, which was then used by NWFB Route 14 to serve as the terminus, while the relocation of Citybus Route 6A took place only in June 2008, and buses have not been allowed to enter and leave the barracks area since then.
In 2008, during the NWFB and Citybus Resource Consolidation, the two companies substantially changed and standardised the name of the stop, with the sub-station formerly known as "Stanley Fort" being renamed as "Che Pau Teng", and the name of this stop being shortened to "Stanley Fort, Wong Ma Kok Road"; however, the staff of the bus company mistakenly posted the new name sticker of "Che Pau Teng" on the new stop sign of Stanley Fort (Gate), resulting in the stop sign of this stop once displaying the name of Che Pau Teng, while the stop sign at Che Pau Teng displayed the old name "Stanley Fort".
