Southern District (南區), one of the 18 districts of Hong Kong, is located in the southern part of Hong Kong Island and is within the Hong Kong Island West area of the Legislative Council constituency.
History[]
The area around the Southern District was settled during the Neolithic period, and the surviving monuments include the Wong Chuk Hang rock carvings. During the Ming Dynasty, more fishermen began to settle in Aberdeen and Kellet Bay (Kai Lung Wan). Shek Pai Wan in Aberdeen was famous for re-exporting perfumed wood products at that time, and Guo Nui's "Records of Guangdong" contains a number of names of places in the present-day Southern District.
Since the early years of Hong Kong's history, the Southern District has been an industrial area, with the Ha Po Dockyard, the first large-scale dockyard in Hong Kong, built in 1857, and later acquired by the Whampoa Dockyard in the 1860s to become the Aberdeen Dry Dockyard[1], and Wong Chuk Hang, which was developed into an industrial area as Hong Kong's industrial development accelerated from the 1950s onwards.
In the past, the Southern District had been a sheltered harbour for fishermen and a place for business. According to the 1961 Hong Kong Census, the number of fishermen in the Southern District reached 28,000, accounting for more than a quarter of the total number of fishermen in Hong Kong at that time [1]. It was not until the 1960s that the Government developed the Southern District and built public housing estates such as Yue Kwong Chuen, Shek Pai Wan Estate, Wah Fu Estate, etc., which enabled many fishermen to come ashore and settle down, while some of the more affluent fishermen resided in Ap Lei Chau Main Street on the north shore of Ap Lei Chau and set up shops [1].
The Southern District used to belong to the Western and Eastern Districts, with the Stanley and Shek O Constituency (D17) originally belonging to the Eastern District and the rest of the district to the Western District. In 1981, in response to the development of representative government, the Government re-distributed the districts according to the distribution of the population so as to achieve a similar population in each district. The Southern District was formed by merging the southern part of Mount Davis Road in the original Western District and Stanley and Shek O in the original Eastern District, while the remaining Western District was merged with the Central District to form the Central and Western District. In addition, part of the area between Kellett Hill and Tin Wan Shan was realigned from the Central and Western Districts to the Southern District and the Central and Western District respectively.
Street/road structure[]
The Southern District is located in the south of Hong Kong Island, and its major external roads include Pok Fu Lam Road, Victoria Road, Aberdeen Tunnel, Nam Fung Road and Tai Tam Road, among which the Aberdeen Tunnel is the most heavily utilised by vehicles, and most of the franchised buses in the Southern District use the Aberdeen Tunnel as a route for their journeys to and from Hong Kong. However, due to the frequent congestion at the Cross-Harbour Tunnel at Hung Hom, the Aberdeen Tunnel (especially northbound) is often blocked by traffic queues. During peak hours, long traffic queues are common in the Aberdeen Tunnel, and sometimes it takes more than 15 minutes to enter the tunnel from Wong Chuk Hang.
In addition, Pok Fu Lam Road, Shek Pai Wan Road, Aberdeen Main Road, Wong Chuk Hang Road, Island Road, Repulse Bay Road, Stanley Gap Road and Tai Tam Road were part of the early "Kwan Tai Lo", which was later renamed as Island Road before it was dismantled in the 1960s. The remaining sections with more bus routes include Wah Fu Road, Aberdeen Praya Road and Nam Long Shan Road.
Ap Lei Chau, on the other hand, relies on the Ap Lei Chau Bridge, which is the only external bridge, initially with only one lane for each direction. When the bridge had to be closed due to accidents, the external traffic of Ap Lei Chau was completely cut off, and the Hong Kong Government eventually used the duplicate bridge approach to build another bridge next to it, so as to make the bridge into a two-lane, two-way carriageway.
