The SkyPier Terminal (海天中轉大樓), located at 3 Sky City Road East, Hong Kong International Airport, Islands District, New Territories, is a transfer terminal for sea-land and land-air transfer passengers under the management of the Airport Authority, and is part of the Airport Passenger Facilities.

The main objective of setting up the SkyPier Terminal is to provide convenient land-air and sea-air transfer services for airport transit passengers travelling to and from Zhuhai or Macau via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB), as well as to and from other parts of the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region via ferry services. The SkyPier Terminal and its ancillary closed vehicular bridge are located within the vicnities of Airport Restricted Area (ARA) and the Frontier Closed Road respectively, and there are currently no facilities for customs clearance and immigration clearance, or provision of passageways for travelling to and from other roads on the airport island. It is not open to travellers who are not transiting on flights operated by SkyPier Terminal participating airlines and cannot be used for interchanging between buses and ferries; in short, local passengers cannot use the cross-boundary bus or ferry services provided by the Terminal to travel in and out of Hong Kong.

Land transport part (expanded sector)[]

The HZMB Hong Kong Port is adjacent to the Hong Kong International Airport, however, the two control points are not connected to each other, so if Macau residents want to go to the Hong Kong International Airport by land, they still need to go through Hong Kong immigration formalities at the HZMB Hong Kong Port, and then transfer to NLB Route B4 to go to the airport for boarding formalities, or take a jet boat at the Macau Outer Harbour or Taipa Ferry Terminal to go to the SkyPier in order to skip Hong Kong's immigration formalities.

In view of this, the Airport Authority of Hong Kong plans to construct an intermediate passenger terminal building next to the SkyPier at the airport, with a closed flyover connecting to the HZMB Hong Kong Port, which is expected to be completed in 2022. By then, travellers only need to check in and check their baggage at the Macao or Zhuhai ports and then take a cross-boundary bus to the restricted area of the HZMB Hong Kong Port, and do not need to undergo Hong Kong's immigration and customs clearance formalities. [1]

However, the Macau government was still striving for the early commencement of the direct bus service to the Hong Kong Airport, and the route will eventually commence service on 16 December 2019, operated by Hong Kong & Macao International Airport Transportation Service Company Limited, with an initial frequency of 38 round trips from Mondays to Fridays, and 44 round trips on Saturdays and Sundays. As the SkyPier Terminal was still under construction, passengers at the initial stage of operation still needed to go through Hong Kong immigration clearance at the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Hong Kong Boundary Crossing Facilities before proceeding to the Hong Kong Airport until its inception on 30 August 2023. The Zhuhai HK Airport Direct was also launched on 12 December of the same year terminating here as well.

SkyPier Terminal Bonded Vehicular Bridge[]

Between the HZMB Hong Kong Port artificial island and the SkyPier Terminal, there is a SkyPier Terminal Bonded Vehicular Bridge (海天中轉大樓封閉行車橋) running in an east-west direction, which is a Frontier Closed Area (FCA) road and is only accessible by HK Airport Direct coaches and other authorised vehicles. The flyover has one traffic lane each way, adopting a left-up-right-down traffic arrangement, and switches to a right-up-left-down traffic direction inside the Terminal.[2]

Operational procedures[]

Entering the terminal from Zhuhai or Macau[]

Passengers should purchase their tickets in advance and then proceed to the departure port for check-in and baggage (optional, only for passengers travelling on specific airlines[Remark 1]) and boarding buses to the SkyPier Terminal. After disembarkation, passengers will proceed to Level 3 for passenger check-in, baggage check-in, airport security screening and Airport Departure Tax refund, and then take the Automated People Mover to the Terminal gates for boarding. Passengers are not allowed to leave the restricted area.[3]

For passengers who have checked in their baggage at the Zhuhai or Macau ports, their baggage will be transported directly to the flight via the handling area (Level 2) and will be collected at the final destination.

Leaving the terminal to Zhuhai and Macau[]

Upon arrival in Hong Kong, passengers should not go through immigration clearance and proceed to the SkyPier Terminal Ticketing Counter at E2 Transfer Area to purchase tickets for boarding the Automated People Mover to the SkyPier Terminal. Passengers with checked baggage should present the baggage check-in receipt issued by the airline at the transfer counter for customs clearance and baggage transfer. The bus will then proceed to the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge to the Zhuhai or Macau Port, where passengers will undergo immigration clearance.[3]

For passengers travelling on designated airlines[Remark 2], baggage can be linked directly to the final port of entry for collection.

Minimum transfer times[]

Minimum transfer time depends on different airlines and ports of departure/destination, please refer to the relevant route articles for information.

Off service buses[]

There are no roads connecting the top floor of the SkyPier Terminal to other parts of the airport island. If off-service buses need to leave the Closed Area directly from the Terminal, they have to make use of the arrival lanes of the HZMB Hong Kong Port Artificial Island to access the non-Closed Area roads, and vice versa.

Facilities[]

The land-air intermodal facility is located on the fourth (top) level, with two separate drop-off and pick-up areas. The drop-off area is connected to the original SkyPier building structure, while the pick-up area uses an island design, with three coach parking spaces in each area. All loading and unloading areas are covered, and an electronic display screen modelled on the boarding gate is installed at each boarding platform to indicate the bus destination, departure time and the codeshare flight number.[4]
