Shek Kip Mei (石硤尾) is located in the eastern part of Sham Shui Po District in Kowloon, covering Shek Kip Mei Estate, Pak Tin Estate, Tai Hang Sai Estate broadly as public housing areas, including Woh Chai Shan.

It is worth mentioning that Tai Hang Tung Estate is actually in the Kowloon Tsai area. Following the opening of Shek Kip Mei Station of the Modified Initial System, residents began considering Tai Hang Tung Estate as a part of Shek Kip Mei.

History[]

After the Second World War, many of the refugees poured in Hong Kong due to the Chinese Civil War. Formerly named as "Kap Shek Mei" (甲石尾), Shek Kip Mei is one of the refuge areas for the refugees to seek in.

A big fire started around Shek Kip Mei during Christmas in 1953, covering Shek Kip Mei Upper Village, Shek Kip Mei Lower Village, Pak Tin Upper Village, Pak Tin Lower Village, Woh Chai Upper Village and Woh Chai Lower Village, which led to 53,000 residents losing their homes.[1]

Redevelopment of Shek Kip Mei Estate[]

In 1990, the Housing Authority has decided to redevelop a part of the Shek Kip Mei Estate. The dilapidated and outdated buildings are demolished. The only remaining block left is Mei Ho House, formerly named Block 41, is one of the eight Mark I resettlements blocks built in 1954. Mei Ho House was closed in 2004, it was awarded been as a Grade II historic building. In 2008, the government pushed Revitalising Historic Buildings Through Partnership Scheme. Hong Kong Youth Hostels Association chose Mei Ho House as a modern hostel. In December 2013, Mei Ho House has been reopened, having 129 rooms, showing the development of Hong Kong public housing and the people's livelihood.
