Shatin Central Bus Terminus (沙田市中心總站, Citybus Location Code NTP)[1] is located on the ground floor of New Town Plaza Phase 1, 18-19 Sha Tin Centre Street, Sha Tin Central, Sha Tin District, New Territories. It is the largest bus terminus in Shatin and in Hong Kong, occupying an area of 7,650 square metres, equivalent to a standard football pitch.[2]

The bus terminus has a parallel platform design with 21 bus stops in four waiting areas comprising three westbound and two eastbound pits, with platform numbering light boxes on the false ceiling. There are two entrances to the terminus, one at Sha Tin Centre Street and the other at Tai Po Road - Sha Tin. Buses must enter the terminus via a slip road from the junction with Sha Tin Rural Committee Road.

The Shatin Central Bus Terminus is strategically located next to the MTR Sha Tin Station, the public transport interchange opposite the Sha Tin Station concourse, New Town Plaza, Royal Park Hotel, New Town Tower, Sha Tin Town Hall (Tam Kon Po Street), and various private and public housing estates, and is heavily patronised from morning to night with daily number of 96,000 passengers using this stop[3]. KMB has also set up a Customer Service Centre in the stop for the convenience of passengers.

"The name "Shatin Central Bus Terminus" is the name given to this station by the Transport Department. LWB use the same Chinese name, but the English name is "Sha Tin Central B/T"; KMB mainly uses the Chinese name "沙田市中心總站" with the same English naming as LWB, until 2019 when its English naming was changed to "Shatin Central Bus Terminus". The name shown on the wall of this stop is "Shatin Central (New Town Plaza) Bus Terminus" (沙田市中心(新城市廣場)總站), while Citybus and NWFB directly name this stop as "Sha Tin Central" (沙田市中心) and its dynamic bus stop list shows the name as "Sha Tin (New Town Plaza)" (沙田新城市廣場).

History[]

The development of Sha Tin New Town began in the 1970s and the Sha Tin Town Centre was formed between the late 1970s and the early 1980s, with the electrification of the Kowloon-Canton Railway British Section completed in 1983. The New Town Plaza Phase I, which runs through Sha Tin Station, was opened in 1984 and the Sha Tin Town Centre Bus Terminus, located on the ground floor of Phase I, was officially opened on 1 December[1]. The new bus terminus replaced the former Sha Tin Market Bus Terminus next to Sha Tin Market and the slip road off Tai Po Road to the new terminus was opened at 10am.[4]

Today, the Shatin Central Bus Terminus is the busiest bus terminus in Sha Tin, with 21 bus stops, 13 bus routes and many more passing through it.

Multi-Media Bus Terminus[]

In December 2000, KMB completed the refurbishment of the Shatin Central Bus Terminus. The tiled walls at both ends of the terminus were replaced with oiled aluminium panels and double-layered light pipes, together with white floodlights installed on top of the bus terminus to enhance the overall illumination. The Supervisor's Office is also newly designed to monitor the six CCTV cameras installed inside the bus terminus, which can be directly transmitted to KMB Headquarters to monitor changes in passenger volume and road traffic conditions in the vicinity for timely bus service adjustments.

In terms of waiting facilities, individual frequency display panels are installed at each terminal platform to provide passengers with information on the next departure time, fare and roads observed, etc. All waiting platforms are equipped with stainless steel queuing rails and additional seats. In addition, two 120-inch electronic projection screens have been installed on the ceiling of the station to display the latest route information and KMB information. The new KMB Customer Service Centre, located in the centre of the terminal, is equipped with multimedia facilities and a 40-inch LCD screen to replace the existing service counter on the ground floor of New Town Plaza Phase 1.

The refurbishment project cost over $6 million and was inaugurated on 12 January 2001 as the first "multi-media bus terminus" in Hong Kong.[5]

Passenger Information Facilities[]

STCBT-D3

KMB installed Extra large bus stop information board at Shatin Central Bus Terminus in 2010

After a 10-year gap, KMB added passenger information facilities to all major bus termini in 2010, starting with the Shatin Central Bus Terminus.

In the centre of the board is a map showing the location of each bus stop, while on the other side, information on routes to different districts is provided, including the name of the destination in English and Chinese, the corresponding platform number and fare. At the same time, information boards on the routes and destinations of the four platforms are installed on the columns near the escalators. These information boards allow passengers to walk a shorter distance to the correct waiting area, thus saving them time in finding the bus stop.[3]

Two years later, KMB installed liquid crystal display (LCD) screens on some of the waiting platforms at the terminus to display frequency information, real-time news and service promotion messages, replacing the existing light-emitting diode (LED) frequency display screens.

Supercapacitor Bus Charging Facilities[]

20160530 SHA TIN CENTRAL

To tie in with the commissioning of Supercapacitor Bus on Route 284, KMB installed charging facilities on the route's platform

To cater for the four supercapacitor buses to be arranged to run on Route 284, KMB proposed to the Sha Tin District Council in July 2014 to provide a substation, charging racks, charging cabinets and cabling at the Shatin Central Bus Terminus[6]. Due to the time required for the application, KMB was only granted construction permission in late 2015 and completed in the second quarter of 2016.[7]

Two supercapacitor buses, AYM1 and AYM2, finally joined Route 284 on 29 March 2017 for a two-year trial programme.
