Sai Kung Public Transport Interchange (西貢公共運輸交匯處) is located to the east of the junction of Fuk Man Road and Wai Man Road in Sai Kung Town Centre, Sai Kung District, New Territories, close to the Sai Kung Public Pier and the Sai Kung New Public Pier, and is served by an open-air parallel-platform bus terminus and a green minibus (GMB) terminus.
The public transport interchange bordering the Sai Kung waterfront is bisected by Fuk Man Road. The bus terminus is located in the north opposite to the Sai Kung Waterfront Park (commonly known as "Paper Boat Park", 紙船公園), while the minibus terminus is located in the south adjacent to the many seafood restaurants in the Sai Kung Waterfront Plaza. At present, most of the external franchised bus and green minibus routes in Sai Kung Town use this terminus, and it is also the home base of Sai Kung P.L.B. (Maxicab) (No. 1 & 2) Company Limited, a major minibus operator in the area, which is called "Sai Kung Pier", reflecting the geographical location of the terminus.
History[]
Bus service in Sai Kung was first introduced in 1948 with Route 22 running between Sai Kung and Kowloon City. The bus terminus was located outside the Sai Kung Public School [1] at the existing public car park; the side of the car park on Ordinary Road opposite to Tsung Tsin Primary School, which was relocated in around the early seventies, has been converted into Sai Kung Garden nowadays.
The existing Sai Kung Public Pier was completed and opened in the 1980s [2] as a result of the reclamation works carried out by the Government in the 1970s to expand the Sai Kung Town Centre. The Sai Kung Town Bus Terminus (西貢市巴士總站) [3] for franchised buses, the Sai Kung Town Public Light Bus (Scheduled Service) Terminus (西貢市公共小型巴士(專線服務)總站) [4] at Fuk Man Road for green minibuses, as well as the Wai Man Road public light bus terminus at its present location near the public pier were opened on 21 October 1986. [5]
The location of a PLB terminus is closely related to fung shui. In the 1970s, Man Yee New Village was built on the beach in front of Tin Hau Temple in Sai Kung by reclamation to resettle villagers who had lost their homes due to the construction of Man Yee Reservoir. Sai Kung residents, who believe in fung shui, considered that this move would not allow Tin Hau to look at the sea anymore and would be detrimental to the fung shui of Sai Kung, so they requested the Administration to designate a reserve zone prohibiting the construction of high-rise buildings, which stretches from the Tin Hau Temple to the northeast to the Yeung Chau Island, which is located at the sea front of Sai Kung, and is known as the "Yeung Chau Road". The present site of the GMB terminus is the seaward end of Yeung Chau Road, which is used as the terminus of the GMB because of the unavailability of high-rise buildings. [6]
Surrounding Facilities[]
The Public Transport Interchange (PTI) is situated at the northeast waterfront of Sai Kung Town Centre, with the minibus terminus connected to the waterfront. The "Sai Kung Seafood Street", which is made up of a whole row of restaurants, is well known in the neighbourhood and attracts many people and tourists to come here to taste seafood delicacies, especially during holidays. Adjacent to the bus terminus and the minibus terminus are the Sai Kung Public Pier and the Sai Kung New Public Pier, which are served by a number of ferries and kaito routes travelling to the outer islands of Sai Kung such as Kau Sai Chau, Sharp Island (Half Moon Bay) and Yim Tin Tsai.
To the northwest of the bus terminus is the Sai Kung Tang Shiu Kin Sports Ground, and the Sai Kung Waterfront Park is next to the terminus, which is known as the "Paper Boat Park" because of the sculpture of a paper boat in the pond there, and the Volcano Exploration Centre of the UNESCO World Geopark in Hong Kong is also located in the Park.
