Route 8 (八號幹線) is a major trunk road connecting the Hong Kong International Airport with Sha Tin, running through Tsing Yi and Cheung Sha Wan, with a total length of about 33 kilometres.
The entire section of Route 8 was constructed in three phases, with the first phase from the Airport to Tsing Yi completed in 1997. The second phase, from Sha Tin to Cheung Sha Wan, was opened to traffic in March 2008, while the last phase, from Tsing Yi to Cheung Sha Wan, was completed and opened to traffic in December 2009; the second and third phases are collectively known as "Tsing Sha Highway".
Route 8 is the only route in Hong Kong with exit numbers in the opposite direction to the mileage markers.
Main sections[]
The entire Route 8 is an expressway, except for the Lantau Toll Plaza, the tunnel area and Trunk Road T3.

Bus stops[]
There are only three bus intermediate stops along Route 8, namely Tai Wai San Tsuen, Tsing Sha Highway BBI and Lantau Link BBI.
Usage situation[]
The North Lantau Highway is an essential route for the Airport and North Lantau external routes, as well as for travelling to and from Disneyland, and is the busiest and most heavily travelled section of Route 8. A number of A-head airport bus routes to/from New Territories East, Kowloon Central or Hong Kong Island pass through the Nam Wan Tunnel and Stonecutters Bridge.
The section between Tsing Sha Highway and Cheung Sha Wan and Sha Tin has not been used by bus routes in the first few years after its completion due to the design of the road exits until 2012, when the bus companies proposed to divert the existing bus routes or introduce new bus routes in their bus route development programmes in the subsequent years. However, the overall utilisation rate so far is much lower than that of the other two tunnels connecting New Territories East and Kowloon (Lion Rock Tunnel and Tate's Cairn Tunnel).
