Rickshaw Sightseeing Bus (人力車觀光巴士) was once a franchised open-top bus sightseeing route brand under Citybus. It was established by New World First Bus in 2009 and was changed to be operated by Citybus from 1 July 2023.

This tourist-oriented bus has been modified with a green tent on the upper deck tail that replicates a Hong Kong rickshaw, which, together with the rickshaw motif on the body, makes the bus look like a rickshaw travelling to and from many attractions and monuments in Hong Kong and Kowloon.

On 23 July 2024, the "Rickshaw Sightseeing Bus" branding was officially repackaged into "HK City Sightseeing" (觀光城巴).

Tourists travelling on the upper deck of open-top buses through the Cross Harbour Tunnel can experience the "hot dog" buses travelling on the cross-harbour tunnel routes in the old days

Sightseeing by open-top buses in Hong Kong has always required joining a tour group or chartering a chartered bus, and sightseeing bus services operated in the form of tour group packages do not allow passengers to board and alight at will along the way, thus preventing them from realising the true meaning of self-guided travel.

NWFB has introduced a franchised sightseeing bus service with stops along the way, which allows travellers to control the length of stay at each scenic spot. Passengers can enjoy the scenery along the route and make use of the bus service to travel to and from many attractions on both sides of the Victoria Harbour, as well as experiencing the fun of open-top bus travel and sightseeing at affordable prices.

NWFB won the Gold Award in the Marketing PR (Services) category of the 9th China Best PR Case Competition organised by the China International Public Relations Association in 2010 for its innovative branding and promotion strategy for its Rickshaw Sightseeing Bus service. [1]

With the 2023 Citybus and NWFB Franchised Bus Network Merger, the Rickshaw Sightseeing Bus brand was inherited by Citybus.

Regular routes[]

Rickshaw Sightseeing Bus was the second batch of franchised buss to operate with open-top buses after the 15C routes. It is also the only remaining Citybus (and pre-merger NWFB) regular route to use open-top buses, as well as the first NWFB route to offer a day pass concession. Passengers can purchase a $200 "All Day Pass" for unlimited rides on Rickshaw Sightseeing Bus routes for two consecutive service days.

At the moment before the brand was abandoned, Citybus operated the following two “Rickshaw Sightseeing Bus" routes:

Since New Year's Eve 2009, NWFB has operated special bus routes under the name of ‘Rickshaw Tour Bus’ every New Year's Eve (no service in 2019 and 2020) for the public to celebrate the festive season. Starting from 2022, the special festive routes were extended to cover the Mid-Autumn Festival, Halloween and Christmas, and in 2023, to coincide with the end of NWFB's franchise, a special service was launched to allow the public to look back and reminisce about NWFB's past.

Past service details of "Rickshaw Sightseeing Bus"

The "Rickshaw Sightseeing Bus" service initially comprised of two routes:

  • Heritage Route (懷舊之旅)[2]:H1 (Central (Star Ferry )HKU)
    • Major attractions: Hollywood Road, Dr. Sun Yat-sen Museum, HKU, Sai Ying Pun Seafood Street
  • Metropolis Route (動感之旅)[2]: H2 (Central (Star Ferry)Causeway Bay)
    • Major attractions: Golden Bauhinia Square, Causeway Bay Shopping Area, Queen's Road East (Daytime departures)/Hennessy Road (Nighttime departures), St John's Cathedral
  • Single journey fare: HK$8.7 ($4.4 for children/elderly)
    • As both Routes H1 and H2 are non-circular routes, passengers need to pay the fare for two journeys at Central (Star Ferry and Pokfield Road/Happy Valley Racecourse.
  • Passengers may also purchase a "Day Ticket" for $50.0, which entitles them to unlimited rides on Routes H1 and H2 within the service day (if the validity day is on New Year's Eve, the One Day Ticket would also be applicable on Route H2A).

Ticketing[]

Single-journey fare[]

The single-journey fare of "Rickshaw Sightseeing Bus" was HK$41.8 ($20.9 for children/elderly), and passengers have to pay the fare by cash or Octopus when boarding the bus (no alighting payment is required for Tsim Sha Tsui or Central direction), and there is no change of fare.

Since H1 and H2 are not circular routes, if passengers need to take a circular route, i.e. from Star Ferry and return to Star Ferry after passing through various stops along the route, they need to get off at Tsim Sha Tsui, and could not stay on the bus, and had to pay the fare of the single journey again when they re-board the bus.

Day Pass[]

Rickshaw Sightseeing Buses have a Day Pass (全日票) (formerly known as One Day Pass (一天票)) available for purchase, which entitled passengers to unlimited rides on all Rickshaw Sightseeing Bus routes on the day of validity of the Day Pass (as indicated by the date stamp on the back of the ticket). Passengers who have purchased a ticket will receive a free Rickshaw Sightseeing Bus-Day Pass Travel Guide with a street map.

There are two types of tickets, one is a physical paper ticket that passengers must present to the bus captain for checking when boarding the bus, and the other is a virtual ticket that is stored on the Octopus card after purchasing with the Octopus card. Passengers can press the "Day Pass" button next to the Octopus sensor that lights up with a red circle when boarding the bus and tap their card for payment. The full-day ticket would be stored on the card immediately. Passengers taking the Rickshaw Sightseeing Bus again on the same day only need to tap the Octopus card when boarding the bus, and the Octopus card would not be debited again.

As for the paper tickets, they could be bought at the following locations or on Citybus eShop:

The cum kiosk of Rickshaw Sightseeing Bus at , which provides information of Rickshaw Sightseeing Bus and Citybus services

The regulator's room cum kiosk of Rickshaw Sightseeing Bus at Central (Star Ferry, which provides information of Rickshaw Sightseeing Bus and Citybus services

The Government's Public Transport Fare Subsidy Scheme was also applicable to the above Single Journey Fares and Whole Day Passes. Regardless of whether the tickets are purchased by cash, Octopus or other means, passengers are required to present Octopus card for registration to the staff of the bus company so that the relevant fares were linked to the Octopus card record for calculating the total monthly fare expenditure and the amount of subsidy.

Promotional concessions[]

NWFB regularly launched promotional concessions which aimed to attract passengers travelling on Rickshaw Sightseeing Buses.

During the period from 1 April to 31 December 2010, visitors who purchase an MTR Visitor Day Pass, Visitor Transit Pass or Airport Express Travel Ticket were given a coupon for a 10% discount on an adult full-day Rickshaw Sightseeing Bus ticket.[3][4]

In response to the Central and Western District Tourism Festival, NWFB offered a "one-person-fare, two-person-trip" promotion, whereby every Saturday from 18 September to 9 October 2010, a person who purchases a full-day ticket on a Rickshaw Sightseeing Bus were able to bring along a companion for free on that day.[5]

Other companies or organisations have also organised promotions to give away free rides or one-day tickets on the Rickshaw Sightseeing Bus to participants, such as the promotions of Baby Kingdom and Flight Experience Hong Kong[6].

From 24 December 2013 to 30 November 2014, NWFB and Citybus announced the launch of the Madame Tussauds Hong Kong on the Peak's "Madame Tussauds Bus Pass" to attract visitors to the Madame Tussauds and highlight the newly opened exhibition hall, "The Magic Kingdom", with the "3-in-1" and "4-in-1" packages. The "3-in-1" package includes admission to the Madame Tussauds, a one-day ticket on NWFB's Rickshaw Sightseeing Buses and a return ticket on NWFB Route 15, while the "4-in-1" package includes a return ticket on Cityflyer (Hong Kong Island or Kowloon)[7]. After the reorganisation of the Rickshaw Sightseeing Bus routes, NWFB continued to co-operate with the Madame Tussauds to offer the "Madame Tussauds Hong Kong + Rickshaw Sightseeing Bus Pass", which includes a one-time visit to Madame Tussauds Hong Kong and a full-day ticket of the NWFB rickshaw tour bus, priced at $333 for adults, and $206 for children and senior citizens.[8]

Between 8 February and 30 April 2015, Route H1 launched the "1-2-3 Limited Time Offer", where passengers could purchase an all-day pass valid for two consecutive service days for $120, which is 60% off the original price of $200 for an all-day ticket, and the offer is even up to 30% off when calculated on a two-day basis.[9] The two-day pass offer continued from 1 May to 31 August of the same year and was renamed as the "1+1 Offer", but the fare was increased to $200. The offer was later extended, and there is no official end date for the offer at this time.

Between 30 March and 6 May 2017, a limited-time offer was available on routes H1 and H2. Children aged 4 to 11 years old could enjoy free rides on both routes from Tsim Sha Tsui to Central (Star Ferry) by presenting their Child Octopus card.[10]

NWFB and Hong Kong Disneyland collaborated to launch the Hong Kong Disneyland Special Edition commemorative ticket, which was limited to a total of 2,000 sets. Themed around the park's new nighttime castle show "Disney's Starry Night Lights Tour", the package includes a ticket holder, a full-day Rickshaw Sightseeing Bus pass, a "Starry Night Lights Tour Sparkling Pin" and a "Starry Night Drinks" redemption voucher, all of which are individually numbered with a semi-transparent design. The total value of the ticket is $294, with a price of $198 and will be available on 6 August 2022 morning. In addition, the first 50 purchasers of the six special edition tickets would receive an additional standard one-day admission ticket to Hong Kong Disneyland (valued at $639). Passengers could enjoy unlimited rides on routes H1 and H2 within two consecutive Rickshaw Tourist Bus service days from the date of purchase to 13 November of the same year.[11]

In response to the 2023 Citybus and NWFB Franchised Bus Network Merger, NWFB not only provided Route H1B service from 19 May 2023, but also launched a limited number of commemorative "Farewell to NWFB" ticket packages starting from noon of the 13th of the same month, comprising of a special commemorative version of the full-day ticket of "Farewell to NWFB" and a special version of the sticker of Special Moments of NWFB, priced at $200 per package. The ticket could be used for unlimited rides on routes H1, H1B and H2 during the "Rickshaw Sightseeing Bus" service days from the date of purchase to 2 July of the same year by stamping the date of use on the ticket at the Rickshaw Sightseeing Bus service stations.[12]

On 16 January 2024, Hong Kong Airlines launched a joint promotion with Rickshaw Sightseeing Bus, offering a 10% discount on purchase of Rickshaw Sightseeing Bus Day Pass with the promotional code "HXCTB" for visiting passengers inbound on any Hong Kong Airlines flights to Hong Kong, with no usage limit during the day, and the promotion lasted until 30 June 2024.[13][14]

In April 2024, Rickshaw Sightseeing Bus again collaborated with Hong Kong Disneyland to launch a limited edition of 2,000 sets of commemorative tickets for the Duffy and Friends Tour at Hong Kong Disneyland. Themed "Duffy and Friends Play Days", the package includes a themed ticket set, a full-day Rickshaw Sightseeing Bus pass, a round-trip ticket for Citybus' Peak Explorer routes 15/X15, and a snack voucher for the park. The ticket was priced at $228 and is valid for unlimited rides on routes H1, H2 and H2K from the date of purchase to 30 June of the same year.

History[]

Years of preparation[]

As early as January 2002, shortly after the commissioning of KMB's Kowloon Sightseeing Route T1, NWFB applied to the Transport Department (TD) for the operation of an open-top bus route running from Central to Causeway Bay via Hollywood Road, Spring Garden Lane in Wan Chai, the Central Library in Causeway Bay, the Jockey Club Museum in Happy Valley, and so on, and the route was scheduled to avoid the busy roads, and the circular route would run for two hours, with a frequency of about 20 minutes. At that time, NWFB hoped that the service would be launched in the third quarter of 2002 and intended to operate on a long-term basis, with a view to building up the confidence of tourists who considered that a three-month period alone would not be sufficient.[15]

In December 2002, NWFB revised its routes to operate between Central (Exchange Square) and Shau Kei Wan[16] and proposed to the District Council in the 2003-2004 Bus Route Development Programme.[17] In 2003, when Hong Kong was ravaged by the SARS epidemic, the economy was hard hit and the market was in the doldrums. NWFB postponed the proposal until August, when some District Council members claimed that they were concerned about the safety of passengers travelling on open-topped buses running along the Island Eastern Corridor, and the plan was shelved again due to the District Council's objection.[18]

On the other hand, the Big Bus Company from London, England, has already been full of surprises. It made use of the retired Dennis Condors purchased from NWFB to form a fleet of open-top buses, and in December 2008, it launched two sightseeing routes, which are the first of their kind in Hong Kong to allow tourists to "Hop-on Hop-off". Shortly afterwards, in the 2009-2010 Bus Route Development Programme announced in early 2009, NWFB and TD again proposed to operate open-top bus routes, namely Route H1 between Central Ferry Piers and Pokfield Road, and Route NWFB Route H2 between Central Ferry Piers and Happy Valley.[19] Route H2 route was very similar to the Big Bus Hong Kong Island Tour, which has led to speculation that NWFB would like to use the new route to compete with the Big Bus. In fact, Citybus, which was also under the NWS Transport Services, launched the Hong Kong Citytours non-franchised bus tour service in May of the same year, which is considered as the first step of NWS to regain the market of "Hop-on Hop-off" open-top buses.

In the midst of the financial tsunami, many councillors considered that the introduction of new coach routes could stimulate the economy, and the Central and Western and Wan Chai DistrictCouncils supported the introduction of these routes. NWFB completed the conversion of its first open-top bus at the Citybus Fo Tan Depot in July 2009, which was completed two months later. At the same time, NWFB launched an internal recruitment exercise to invite interested bus captains to join the company, with an internal circular specifying that the route was expected to commence operation at the end of October.

Official launching[]

The new Rickshaw Sightseeing Bus routes "H1 Heritage Route" and "NWFB Route H2 Metropolis Route" were officially launched on 18 October 2009[20]. In the morning of the previous day, NWFB held the launching ceremony for Rickshaw Sightseeing Bus at the Central Ferry Piers Bus Terminus and arranged for a number of reporters, guests, and members of the two major bus fan organisations - Hong Kong Transport Society and Bus Fan World members were given priority to experience the tour.[21][22]

NWFB also set up an official Facebook page for Rickshaw Sightseeing Bus, the first franchised bus and open-top bus operator in Hong Kong to do so. Through media coverage and promotion in travel books, the Rickshaw Sightseeing Bus has gradually become more widely known to tourists from all over the world, with many local and overseas tourists travelling on the bus.

On 6 November 2009, TVB's evening news programme "Friday Search" featured the Rickshaw Sightseeing Buses[23][24][25] and on the following weekend, hundreds of passengers queued up to take the rickshaw sightseeing buses, resulting in a number of Rickshaw Sightseeing Buses being fully loaded. Since then, the rickshaw tour buses have attracted many bus fans on weekends, while the main source of passengers on weekdays is tourists from outside Hong Kong.

New Year's Eve special route H2A[]

New Year's Eve special route H2A

As 2009 drew to a close, NWFB introduced the new sightseeing route H2A on New Year's Eve, which attracted a large number of bus enthusiasts and members of the public counting down to 2010 on open-top buses.[26][27]

At the beginning of the New Year, NWFB made reference to the fare collection mode of H2A on the launching night and implemented the pay-as-you-go arrangement on the Central-bound trips of routes H1 and NWFB Route H2, so that passengers who had paid the fare for a single journey needed not to get off the bus at the Pokfield Road or Happy Valley termini to pay again, and can continue their journey on board the bus, and pay for the second leg of the journey only when they get off the bus. This arrangement has been formally cancelled from 2023 onwards, with Central-bound trips reverting back to paying on-board, but this directly resulted in passengers travelling to Jordan and even Mong Kok on Hong Kong Island having to pay double the fare.

In 2010, the Rickshaw Sightseeing Bus celebrated its first anniversary. On 18 October, NWFB launched a commemorative one-day ticket, valid until 24 October. On New Year's Eve at the end of the year, NWFB once again operated Route H2A for fun. The starting point and routing was be different from that of the previous year, with the starting point changed from Central Ferry Piers to Central (City Hall), the return point changed from Moreton Terrace to Ngan Mok Street, and the frequency adjusted.
