Princess Margaret Hospital (瑪嘉烈醫院[Remark 1][Remark 2], abbr. PMH) is a major district hospital under the Kowloon West Cluster of the Hospital Authority. It is located at 2-10 Princess Margaret Hospital Road, Lai King Hill, Kwai Tsing District New Territories, with green minibus termini outside Blocks G, P and K. Passengers can also alight at the "Princess Margaret Hospital" or "Ching Lai Court" en-route stops at Lai King Hill Road, and walk to the various buildings along the Princess Margaret Hospital Road or the tunnel.
Behind Block K of Princess Margaret Hospital is the Kwai Chung Hospital Day Recovery Centre (葵涌醫院日間復元中心), which is the terminus of Route 413, and since they are located at similar locations, they are described together in this article.
In addition, Princess Margaret Hospital Lai King Building is located at 10 Lai Kong Street near Highland Park, please refer to the relevant article.
History[]
The Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH), adjacent to Kau Wah Keng, was established in 1975 and is now the acute general hospital for Kowloon West and New Territories South (including Lai Chi Kok, Kwai Chung,Tsing Yi, Tsuen Wan and Tung Chung), providing 24-hour emergency services daily.
In the early years of the hospital's operation, KMB operated Route 45H to and from Lai Chi Kok (Bridge), which was replaced by Route 45B in 1979. In 1981, GMBs were fully deployed to Princess Margaret Hospital, with the addition of short trips to and from Mei Foo on Route 90M. Since the late 1990s, a number of GMB operators have been operating routes to and from Kwai Tsing/Tsuen Wan districts. As the minibus stops outside Blocks G and P can only accommodate two sets of routes, the three late-opening routes stop opposite to Block K and enter and exit the hospital via Kwai Chung Hospital Road. Passengers can take the lifts at Blocks G/P to access the hospital buildings (G/F and 4/F) for GMB routes.
During the outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in 2003, the Government designated Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) for the centralised treatment of SARS patients on 28 March. Immediately after that, Tin Yan Estate was taken over as a temporary quarters for healthcare staff on 1 April, and the conversion was completed on 24 April. From 28 April to 27 May, KMB Route H1 served the Tin Shui Wai Temporary Quarters for healthcare staff by stopping opposite to the Lai King Hill Road Nursing Quarters.
To facilitate convenient travelling between the hospital and the Lai King Hill Road bus stop for the public and staff, Princess Margaret Hospital has received a donation of $11 million from the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust Fund for the construction of a lift building to improve the barrier-free facilities. The Hospital Authority commenced the "Lift and Pedestrian Access System from Lai King Hill Road to Princess Margaret Hospital" project in November 2015. The new lift building connects Lai King Hill Road with Princess Margaret Hospital and leads directly to the Accident and Emergency (A&E) floor, and the facilities were opened to the public in February 2017.
