Pat Heung (八鄉) is located in the eastern part of Yuen Long District and is the largest township among the six major townships when Pat Heung North and Pat Heung South are included.

The vast territory of Pat Heung North borders Ying Pun in North District to the north, Kadoorie Farm in Tai Po District to the east, and Tai Mo Shan Country Park to the south. Places such as Ng Ka Tsuen, Tai Kong Po, Ta Shek Wu, Sheung Tsuen, Kap Lung and Ho Pui Tsuen all fall within the boundaries of Pat Heung.

History[]

Pat Heung is an area within Yuen Long District with relatively low development density. Aside from agriculture and various types of car parks operated by individual businesses, there are only a few low-density residential complexes like The Scenicwoods while Shek Kong has been requisitioned as a military barracks.

Pat Heung began developing in the 20th century. Before the war, only Kam Tin Road and Fan Kam Road (connecting the North District) connected Pat Heung. In the 1950s, the Shek Kong Barracks and the airport began operations, and the government subsequently constructed Lam Kam Road (connecting the Tai Po District), Route Twisk (connecting the Tsuen Wan District) and Kam Sheung Road, thereby establishing the main road network in the area.

In the 1990s, the government constructed the Route 3, which connects the southern part of Pat Heung to Ting Kau in Tsuen Wan District via the Tai Lam Tunnel, and established the Tai Lam Tunnel Bus Interchange, connected by Pat Heung Road. Meanwhile, the construction of the KCR West Rail (now part of MTR Tuen Ma Line and the improvement of the Kam Tin River followed. The government also built Tung Wui Road west of Ng Ka Tsuen, connecting the Kam Sheung Road Station with the adjacent public transport interchange, and improved the roads around the Kam Tin River.

Currently, a train stabling siding (ground section) and an emergency rescue station for the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link have been constructed in Tsoi Yuen Tsuen, Shek Kong, but no passenger station has been established.

Street/road structure[]

The road network in Pat Heung is centred around Sheung Tsuen Bus Terminus, connecting rural roads such as Kam Tin Road, Kam Sheung Road, Fan Kam Road, Lam Kam Road and Route Twisk. Sheung Tsuen Bus Terminus was once the only bus terminus in Pat Heung, supplemented by green minibuses and red minibuses to serve the local residents along the route.

To accommodate the construction of the Country Park section of Route 3, the authorities also constructed Pat Heung Road to connect to the Tai Lam Tunnel Toll Plaza, and established a green minibus terminus under the viaduct to facilitate residents of nearby villages in interchanging to bus routes for travel between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon. The West Rail Line began operations in late 2003, further developing Tung Wui Road to connect to the Kam Sheung Road Station Public Transport Interchange.

Following the introduction of KMB Route 251A on 31 March 2012, the Pat Heung Road Bus Terminus became the second franchised bus terminus in Pat Heung.
