The North Lantau Highway (北大嶼山公路) is part of Route 8 and is mostly an expressway. It was opened on 22 May 1997, linking Tung Chung with the Tsing Chau Tsai Peninsula in northeast Lantau and connecting with the Lantau Link.
Prior to the completion and opening of the Tuen Mun Chek Lap Kok Tunnel Road, the North Lantau Highway was an essential road between Lantau and the Urban via land transport.
History[]
The North Lantau Highway, formerly known as the North Lantau Expressway (北大嶼山公路), is one of the ten Airport Core Programme projects and runs for 12.5km along the north coast of Lantau. The North Lantau Expressway was built on reclaimed land, with more than half of its length being reclaimed from the sea. The Government has also made provision for the construction of the Tung Chung Line and the Airport Express along the coastal area adjacent to the highway, with the entire length of the North Lantau Highway now running parallel to the Lantau Airport Railroad tracks.
The North Lantau Highway, which was gazetted on 11 April 1997[1] and includes the Lantau Link, is 17.35km long and was opened to traffic on 22 May 1997, making it more convenient to travel to and from the Hong Kong International Airport and Lantau. The speed limit for the whole section of the highway is 110 kilometres per hour, which is the highest speed limit in Hong Kong.
Three months later, on 29 August, the Government announced its intention to rename the section of North Lantau Highway between the toll booths at the Lantau Toll Plaza and the Northwest Tsing Yi Interchange as the Lantau Link[2], with effect from 9 January of the following year[3].
Structure[]
Most of North Lantau Highway is an expressway, starting from the Lantau Link Toll Plaza and ending at the Tung Chung East Interchange, and the whole section is within the Route 8.
In addition to Lantau Airport Railway, Cheung Tung Road also runs parallel to the North Lantau Highway.
Passengers travelling between Tung Chung Eastern Interchange and other parts of Lantau Island can take the North Lantau External Route with the route prefixes "E" and drop off at Tung Chung Station and interchange with other New Lantao Bus (NLB) Routes if necessary. Passengers travelling to Yat Tung Estate or Tung Chung North can change to Routes E31 or E32A at Lantau Link Toll Plaza; while passengers travelling to and from Hong Kong International Airport can take the Airport Bus Routes with the route prefixes "A" to reach the airport via North Lantau Highway and Airport Road. Passengers travelling to Hong Kong Disneyland can interchange at the Lantau Link Toll Plaza for the R8 route via North Lantau Highway and Penny's Bay Highway.

Related Incidents[]
- 7 December 2004: At around 4:00am, a Kwoon Chung Motors MAN coach from Tseung Kwan O carrying six airline and airport logistics staff to work in the Airport Logistics Area lost control of the coach when it reached North Lantau Highway near Sunny Bay and crashed into a police ramp on the roadside. The driver, aged 32, was thrown off the bus and died at the scene with his left arm broken.[4][5][6]
- 7 June 2008: During the Black Rainstorm Warning in the morning, a large amount of yellow mud gushed down the slope opposite a section of Caribbean Coast Phase 2 in Tung Chung, causing flooding to all six lanes of traffic and two lanes of Cheung Tung Road, which then paralysed the external traffic between Tung Chung, Airport and the Urban.[7] LWB and Cityflyer routes to and from the Airport and Tung Chung to the City were affected: urban-bound services were suspended; Lantau-bound services were temporarily terminated at Tsing Yi Station or Sunny Bay Station (which had passed through or was located on the Lantau Link towards the airport). [8] It was not until 1:23am on the following day that the road was completely unblocked and traffic was resumed.[9]
- 3 December 2008: A number of New Territories taxis went on strike and blocked the North Lantau Highway to protest against the "long cut short increase" toll, bringing traffic from the Hong Kong International Airport to the urban area to a standstill. As a countermeasure, Airport Express ran overnight that day, and some buses were diverted via Cheung Tung Road. [10]
- 28 August 2009: At around 4am, a HAS MAN 11.220 staff bus carrying more than 20 staff members was travelling along the North Lantau Highway towards Kowloon. When the bus was approaching Siu Ho Wan, it was suspected that the driver was speeding and dozing off, the bus went out of control and swung left and right for a few hundred metres. Several passengers were thrown out of the vehicle and dragged by the overturned bus, resulting in three (3) deaths and 24 injuries[11][12]. The driver, aged 46, was convicted of causing death by dangerous driving and was sentenced to four and a half years' imprisonment and four years' licence suspension on 22 November the following year.[13]
- 1 July 2013: At around 1pm, a Citybus Dennis Trident (2286/JA220), which had not yet been fitted with a black box, was travelling on route E22 along the North Lantau Highway towards the Asiaworld-Expo. When it reached Siu Ho Wan, a van on the central lane lost control of the bus and crashed into a van in front of the bus travelling on the slow lane and then rebounded into the express lane. The bus was badly damaged with the front end and driver's cab seriously broken. The driver was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital with both legs broken and he was then later succumbed to his injuries there. Another 37 other people were injured.[14][15] The bus was not repaired and was retired early due to the severe damage and age of the bus. For more, see the article 2013 North Lantau Highway 3-vehicle accident.
- 30 November 2017: At around 5am, an Enviro500 (8417/PD7770) running on LWB Route N31 towards Tsuen Wan (Discovery Park) crashed into a lorry parked on the shoulder of North Lantau Highway near Sunny Bay, causing serious damage to the left side of the vehicle and injuring 19 people.[16] The 58-year-old driver, surnamed Ng, was charged with Dangerous Driving Causing Grievous Bodily Harm (危險駕駛引致他人嚴重受傷罪) and was sentenced to 17 months' imprisonment and a three-year licence suspension on 8 March 2019.[17]
