History[]

  • 8 June 1979: The Transport Department invited opened tenders for a total of 33 green minibus (GMB) routes in a set of 16, in which this route was grouped together with Route 87.[1]
  • 25 February 1980: Route 88 entered service, running between Tsing Yi Ferry and Nam Wan Kok at that time.[2]
  • October 1980: Some frequency extended to Hong Kong United Dockyard; some minibuses only operated between Tsing Yi Ferry Pier and Cheung ChingEstate during 21:25 and last trip, with no service running between Nam Wan Kok and United Dockyard.
  • 16 May 1982: Route 88M was split and this route was re-routed between AM and PM peak hours to operate between Tsing Yi Ferry Pier and Cheung Ching Estate.
  • 1 April 1984: Changed to operate between Fung Shue Wo Temporary Housing Area (now Tsing Yu New Village) and MTR Kwai Fong Station and the last departure hours extended to 22:00.
  • 1 April 1985: The last departure will be further extended to 23:00.
  • 16 December 1985: Besides the extension of last departure at midnight, the special departure running between Tai Wong Ha Tsuen and MTR Kwai Fong Station was introduced at every 10 minutes from 07:00 to 10:00 and from 16:00 to 19:00;
    • The regular trips also detoured via Tai Wong Ha Tsuen access (current Tsing Sum Street) in addition to the service hours of the special trips.
    • The AM trips would not detour via Chung Mei Road towards Fung Shue Wo Temporary Housing Area.
  • 13 February 1989: Following the implementation of Phase II of the improvement works for Tsing Yi Bridge, the terminus was relocated from Fung Shue Wo Temporary Housing Area to Chung Mei Road, with the return journey re-routing via Cheung On Estate, Tsing Tsuen Bridge and Tsuen Wan Road, which took place in about five months.[3]
  • 18 June 1989: Following the implemention of one-way eastbound traffic arrangement at Tsing Yi Bridge eastbound on a whole-day basis, this route was converted to circular and terminates at MTR Kwai Fong Station, following to obsevre Tsuen Wan Road, Tsing Tsuen Bridge, Cheung On Estate, Fung Shue Wo Road, Tsing Tsui Temporary Housing Area, Fung Shue Wo Road, Tsing Yi Rural Committee Road, Chung Mei Road, Tsing Yi Rural Committee Road and Tsing Yi Bridge.[4]
  • 3 July 1989: The terminus was relocated from Fung Shue Wo Temporary Housing Area to Tsing Yi Estate. and a short trip between Greenfield Garden and MTR Kwai Fong Station was introduced at 12-minute intervals during morning and afternoon peak hours.
  • 1 January 1990: Due to the closure of Tsing Yi Bridge, both directions were re-routed via Tsing Tsuen Bridge[5] until 19 February 1990 until the bridge was reopened to full traffic.[6]
  • 10 February 1991: All special arrangement and special departure omitting Chung Mei Road were cancelled. Among them, the service of Greenfield Garden has been modified to provide special departure service under the name of Route 88B.
  • 25 July 2003: The original operator Kwai Tsing Public Light Bus gave up the operating rights of this route, which led to the re-tendering exercise.[7] Eventually this route was taken over by Pacific Way Transportation Limited.
  • 2 January 2013: Due to the low patronage, the special trip departing from Kwai Fong Station at 00:30 was cancelled.[8]
  • 22 December 2021: Real-time Arrival Information System was introduced to this route.[9]
