The New Territories Green Minibus Route 87A is operated by Asia Brighter Limited (誠運有限公司) (Passenger Service Licence (PSL) No. 11238C) under Chiap Shing Motor. It runs between Kwai Fong (South) and Terminal 8, via Container Terminal Road South (MTR Lai King Station and Container Terminals 1-8).

This route is a hybrid intra-district and cross-district route, with Kwai Fong direction being a Kwai Tsing District intra-district route while the Container Terminal direction serving both Sham Shui Po District and Kwai Tsing District.[Remark 1]

History[]

  • 10 January 1994: The special trip of 87M running between Kwai Fong MTR Station and Container Terminal 6 was extended to Terminal 8 and was independently numbered as 87A.
    • The terminus of Container Terminal 6 is located outside the present China Resources International Logistics Centre (CRILC) and dedicated green minibus terminus still exists at present.
  • 12 June 1995: Detoured via Government Dockyard for Kwai Fong Station direction.
  • 1 December 1996: The arrangement of detouring via Government Dockyard was cancelled due to the commissioning of the Route 44M.[1]
  • 25 July 2003: The original operator Kwai Tsing Public Light Bus gave up the operating rights of this route, which led to the re-tendering exercise.[2] Eventually this route was taken over by Asia Brighter Limited.
  • 21 October 2018: The Kwai Fong terminus was re-located from Hing Ning Road to Container Port Road Public Transport Interchange. [3]
  • 30 March 2022: Real-time Arrival Information System was introduced to this route. [4]
  • No later than November 2023: The Container Terminal Road-bound omitting Container Terminal 4.

Notes:
  • Passengers must use the same Octopus Card to pay the fare for both the minibus and MTR to enjoy the above-mentioned interchange concession.
  • Passengers can enjoy the above interchange concession at any MTR station / minibus stop that connects to the second leg of the route.
  • The MTR ride does not apply to Light Rail, Airport Express, High-Speed Rail, MTR Bus and MTR Feeder Bus services.
  • The MTR interchange concession only applies to paid rides. Unless otherwise specified, passengers using the Monthly Pass Enhanced or Disneyland Resort Line Monthly Pass (including those who have paid First Class Supplementary Fare) cannot enjoy this concession when taking the MTR at designated stations; however, if Enhanced Monthly Pass or Disneyland Resort Line Monthly Ticket holders take paid rides outside the designated stations, the concession still applies.
  • If passengers have just used the same Octopus Card for the Airport Express "Free MTR Connection," they cannot simultaneously enjoy the MTR interchange concession.
  • If both "MTR Fare Saver" and "MTR Interchange Concession" are applicable, passengers can only enjoy one of the higher discounts.
  • Higher concession amounts are available for certain GMB routes at designated MTR stations.

According to the Transport Department's Schedule of Services, a total of 4 minibuses are required to serve this route, of which 1 is a 19-seater minibus that can switch from Route 87. The total number of passengers carried in each direction during the peakiest hour is not less than 96.

Currently Asia Brighter under New Territories Routes 87 series have a total of 31 Toyota Coaster minibuses, included 13 of 16-seater minibuses and 18 of 19-seater minibuses.

Remarks[]

  1. This route observes the boundary between Kwai Tsing and Sham Shui Po districts between Roundabout No. 7 and Chi Ngong Road, and some southbound stops are located at the boundary area.
  2. Numbers placed after the model Toyota Coaster (if any) are only used within the transport enthusiasts, others (including the industry) does not use such names.
  3. That 3rd generation was originally a vehicle on Kam Jet's New Territories Route 409 and was changed to serve Asia Brighter, until March 2010 before retirement.
  4. These series of minibuses once equipped with the Patent Enterprises EDS, the EDS was changed in 2024.
  5. That 4th generation was originally a vehicle on Red Minibus Route 17 and was changed to serve on Asia Brighter, until April 2018 before retirement.
  6. That 4th generation was originally a vehicle on PLB Po Sheung Route, was changed to serve on PLB Kwa Tsing Route and Asia Brighter, until 2018 before retirement.
  7.
