The New Territories Green Minibus Route 86 is operated by Tsuen Wan Route No.86 Public Light Bus Company Limited (荃灣86專線小巴有限公司) (Passenger Service Licence (PSL) No. 10783C). It runs between Shek Lei (Lei Pui Street) and Tsuen Wan (Hoi Kwai Road), via Shek Yam East Estate, MTR Tai Wo Hau Station (Kwok Shui Road) and Tsuen Wan Town Centre (Sha Tsui Road).
History[]
- 8 June 1979: The Transport Department (TD) invited open tenders for 16 groups of 33 new green minibus (GMB) routes, of which this route is grouped together with Route 85.[1]
- 17 February 1980: Route 86 entered service, it ran between Shek Lei (Shek Pai Street) and Tsuen Wan (Yan Chai Street)[2][3] and it was just only 17 minibuses to serve on this route.
- At the time when the extended section of Shek Pai Street was not yet commissioned, the terminus of Shek Pai Street was located at the roundabout outside Kwai Chung Government Technical Secondary School (current Shek Lei Catholic Primary School).
- 17 April 1982: The Tsuen Wan terminus was re-located to Chuen Lung Street.
- Not late than 16 August 1982: Omitted Shek Yam Estate for Tsuen Wan direction with the splitting of Route 83.
- 30 May 1985: Shek Lei Pui Terminus was re-located to Shek Lei (Lei Pui Street) following the completion of Shek Lei Estate Extension (current Shek Lei (i) Estate); it was also enhanced to a 24-hour service, with a fare of $2.0 for the overnight session, with no sectional fares.
- 13 November 1986: The overnight service was individually numbered as 86A.
- 6 April 1990: Due to the construction of Texaco Road Flyover, vehicles from Texaco Road southbound could not turn right to Tsuen Fu Street, and therefore the route was re-routed via Kwok Shui Road, Texaco Road, Sha Tsui Road and Chung On Street for Chuen Lung Street; at the same time, a new route 86M was spun off from this route to provide the original service of Castle Peak Road - Tsuen Wan.[4]; and the Lei Pui Street bound will also detour Tsuen Wan Town Hall.
- 24 August 1996: Re-routed via Tai Loong Street, Tai Pak Tin Street and Lei Muk Road for Tsuen Wan direction and re-routed via Tung Chi Street for Shek Lei direction.[5]
- The cancellation date of this change was unknown.
- 20 December 2003: Tsuen Wan Terminus was re-located to Tsuen Wan Transport Complex following the commencement of the KCR West Rail.
- From 19 December 2005[6]to 30 June 2006[7], an Octopus interchange concession between Route 86 and KCR West Rail was introduced with the fares of Route 86 free of charge.
- 27 January 2013: The "MTR Tsuen Wan West Station" terminus was relocated to Nina Tower Bus Terminus following the permanent closure of the Tsuen Wan Transport Complex for the Tsuen Wan West Station (TW5) "Cityside" residential development.[8]
- 24 February 2019: Tsuen Wan terminus was re-located to Hoi Kwai Road Public Transport Interchange following the commencement of that stop. [9]
