Ridership[]

Platform 803K Tai Wai

Queues for Route 803K occupied the whole platform

With the commissioning of this route, buses have replaced buses as the major public transport service in the Hin Keng Estate area for travelling to and from Tai Wai Station for interchanging with the railway. The operator has used the "vehicle-wave strategy" on this route, and has frequently deployed additional vehicles from Routes 803 and 804 to alleviate passenger demand. Due to the advantages of high frequency, direct routing and cheaper fares than buses, KMB Route 88S suffered a significant loss of passengers and was eventually discontinued in 2005.

During the morning peak hours, the route is usually full at the Hin Tin Village Minibus Terminus, so the operator has arranged for some trips to start at Hin Hing House Hin Keng Estate or to run between Hin Keng Sports Centre and Tai Wai Station only, so as to make it easier for residents of Hin Keng to get onboard. During the afternoon peak hours, long queues often appear at Tai Wai Station and it is not uncommon for passengers to have to wait for more than one minibus before they can get onboard.

However, after the commissioning of the Tuen Ma Line Phase 1, residents in the Hin Keng area can walk to Hin Keng Station and take the MTR directly. The patronage of this route has been reduced by about 80%[2], and the situation of passengers having to wait for more than one minibus to get onboard during peak hours has ceased, therefore, all the abovementioned short-working trips have been cancelled.

Traffic accidents[]

  • 20 August 2011: At around 11:00am, a Toyota Coaster (PD8042) towards Tai Wai Station hit and killed a motorcyclist[3][4] on Che Kung Miu Road.[3][4] On 2 May the following year, the District Court found the driver guilty of causing death by dangerous driving and sentenced him to three years' imprisonment and four years' licence suspension.[5][6]
  • 17 February 2017: A Toyota Coaster (GJ5250) towards Hin Keng collided with a motorcycle when it turned right into Hin Tin Street at Hin Keng Street, leaving the motorcyclist unconscious.[7]
