The New Territories Green Minibus Route 72 is operated by Foo Wo Public Light Bus Limited (富和小巴有限公司) (Passenger Service Licence (PSL) No. 12403C) under Min Kee Motors. It runs between Yuen Long Tai Hang Street and Lui Kung Tin Tsuen, via Au Tau, MTR Kam Sheung Road Station, Kam Sheung Road and Sheung Tsuen.

Due to the restrictions under the licensing conditions, this route must detour via Kam Sheung Road Station even if it is fully loaded and no passenger requests to alight there, and the notice inside has been displayed to remind the drivers and the passengers. A special short-working trip 72M running between Kam Sheung Road Station and Lui Kung Tin Tsuen is also provided by the operator to facilitate passengers transferring to Tuen Ma Line, but it is only classified by the Transport Department (TD) as a special trip of Route 72.

History[]

After KMB Route 51M was shortened to Kam Tin in 1983, Lui Kung Tin Tsuen had to walk to Sheung Tsuen Bus Terminus or Kam Sheung Road for the trip to/from Yuen Long Town and this had aroused the villagers' dissatisfaction. In view of this, the Transport Department (TD) proposed to introduce this route in 1984 to address the villagers' demand and to supplement the heavily patronised Route 64K that ran through Kam Sheung Road.[1]

  • 15 November 1985: The Transport Department (TD) invited open tenders for 11 groups of 24 new green minibus (GMB) routes, with this route being grouped with Route 71.[2]
  • 16 August 1986: Route 72 entered service.[3]
  • 23 February 1988: Omitted Tung Lok Street and re-routed via Kak Yeung Road for Yuen Long (Tai Hang Street) direction due to construction work of Light Rail.
  • 5 August 1988: Detoured via Road L1 (i.e. the present Long Yat Road) for Lui Kung Tin Tsuen direction.
  • 26 January 1992: Due to the traffic change of the road near Yuen Long (Tai Hang Street) terminus, departures from Yuen Long Terminus were re-routed via Yuen Long Tung Tai Street, Tai Lee Street, Wang Chau Road and Yuen Long On Ning Road to Sai Tai Street.
  • 16 December 2003: Detoured via Kam Sheung Road Station Public Transport Interchange for both directions.[4]
  • 27 October 2022: Real-time Arrival Information System was introduced to this route.[5]
