The New Territories Green Minibus Route 61M is operated by Rich Success Transportation Limited (Passenger Service Licence (PSL) No. 11253C). It runs between World Wide Garden and Tai Wai Station whole day every day, with additional services between World Wide Garden and Kowloon Tong Station during Monday to Friday morning peak hours, providing MTR connection services for passengers in the World Wide Gardens area.

History[]

  • 16 October 1981: The Transport Department invited open tenders for the right to operate 19 new GMB routes in 9 groups, of which this route were grouped together with routes 60 series.[1]
  • 28 March 1982: Route 61 entered service, running between Worldwide Gardens and Kowloon Tong MTR Station via Lion Rock Tunnel, non-peak hours was also extended to Tai Wai.[2]
  • 16 May 1982: Renumbered this route as 61M.
  • 25 June 1983: To enhance late-night service between Kowloon Tong MTR Station and Lek Yuen Estate to combat rabbitfish taxis travelling from Kowloon Tong to Sha Tin at night.,[3] departure every 15 minutes until 03:00, the fare is $2.5, and the fare is $1.0 after crossing the Lion Rock Tunnel.[4]
  • 1984 or before:
    • All trips were changed to operate between Tai Wai and Kowloon Tong MTR Station;
    • Two new special trips was introduced:
      • A short-working trip between World Wide Gardens and Kowloon Tong MTR Station during peak hours;
      • Special trips between MTR Kowloon Tong Station and Penfold Park were operated on weekends and holidays other than racing days.
  • 28 May 1984: Enhanced to daily 24-hour service with the following arrangement for late-night hours:[5]
    • A 15-minute interval was maintained between 00:00 and 01:30 and running between Kowloon Tong MTR Station and Lek Yuen/Wo Che with fare maintaining on $2.5;
    • Service was extended to operate circular between Mong Kok MTR Station (Sai Yeung Choi Street) and Lek Yuen/Wo Che between 01:30-05:45, with a 15-minute interval before 03:15, and a 30-minute interval after 03:15, and the fare was $3.0.
    • The special trip from Penfold Park was changed to operate by Route 60K.
  • 28 September 1985: Both directions were detoured via Worldwide Garden (Hung Mui Kuk Road, Chung Pak Road, Lung Pak Street, Chung Pak Road and Hung Mui Kuk Road).
  • 16 May 1986: The overnight special departure from MTR Mong Kok Station (Sai Yeung Choi Street) was advanced to depart at 00:30.
  • 15 August 1988: The return journey was rerouted to Worldwide Garden via Mei Tin Road and Hung Mui Kuk Road, omitting Tai Po Road around Tung Lo Wan Village and a section of Sun Tin Wai Estate, and the return trip will omit Village Road South.
  • 2 June 1991: All trips were shortened to Worldwide Gardens as the terminus, no longer serving Tai Wai (Chik Chun Street) and Mei Tin Road.
  • 1 November 1992: The overnight service between Lek Yuen/Wo Che and MTR Kowloon Tong Station was cancelled.
  • 1 June 1996: The overnight trips are re-numbered as 61S.
  • 2003: The Transport Department revoked the Passenger Service Licence of the original operator Standard Line Limited (立航有限公司) due to its poor service record.,[6] and re-tendering this route with routes 60K, 60P, 60R, 61S, 62K on 1 August.;[7][8] Finally, Rich Success Transportation took over the route on 5 November in the same year, defeating the other five companies including Kiu Wan.
  • 4 November 2006: The terminus ws relocated to the Kowloon Tong (Suffolk Road) Public Transport Interchange on the ground floor of the Kowloon Tong Education Services Centre following its opening.[9]
  • 31 May 2008: Non-peak hour AM period trips were detoured via Tai Wai Station.[10]
  • 22 April 2012: The service between Kowloon Tong Station and Worldwide Gardens was changed to be operated during AM and PM peak hours from Mondays to Fridays only; and off-peak hours, and all trips on Saturdays and Public Holidays were truncated to operate between Worldwide Gardens and Tai Wai Station only.
  • 7 June 2021: Change to provide service between Kowloon Tong Station only on Monday to Friday mornings; and the short-working trips to and from Tai Wai Station were upgraded to operate whole day every day.[11]
  • 24 September 2021: Real-time Arrival Information was introduced to this route.[12]

  • Passengers must use the same Octopus Card to pay the fare for both the minibus and MTR to enjoy the above-mentioned interchange concession.
  • Passengers can enjoy the above interchange concession at any MTR station / minibus stop that connects to the second leg of the route.
  • The MTR ride does not apply to Light Rail, Airport Express, High-Speed Rail, MTR Bus and MTR Feeder Bus services.
  • The MTR interchange concession only applies to paid rides. Unless otherwise specified, passengers using the Monthly Pass Enhanced or Disneyland Resort Line Monthly Pass (including those who have paid First Class Supplementary Fare) cannot enjoy this concession when taking the MTR at designated stations; however, if Enhanced Monthly Pass or Disneyland Resort Line Monthly Ticket holders take paid rides outside the designated stations, the concession still applies.
  • If passengers have just used the same Octopus Card for the Airport Express "Free MTR Connection," they cannot simultaneously enjoy the MTR interchange concession.
  • If both "MTR Fare Saver" and "MTR Interchange Concession" are applicable, passengers can only enjoy one of the higher discounts.
  • Higher concession amounts are available for certain GMB routes at designated MTR stations.

According to the Transport Department's Schedule of Services, this route requires 2 minibuses to provide service. The total passenger capacity in each direction during the peak hour is not less than 48.

Currently,this route and Routes 60K, 60P, 60R and 62K have a total of 29 Toyota Coaster minibuses, including 17 16-seater minibuses and 12 19-seater minibuses. Some minibuses also run on the New Territories Route 61S during overnight period.
