The New Territories Green Minibus (GMB) Route 59K is operated by Big Union Limited (大強發展有限公司) under Ma Ah Muk (Passenger Service Licence (PSL) No. 4761C). It runs between Sheung Shui Station and Lin Ma Hang, via Sandy Ridge, Man Kam To, Ta Kwu Ling and Heung Yuen Wai Port.

Following the implementation of the third phase of the reduction of the Frontier Closed Area (FCA) on 4 January 2016, most of the roads and villages along this route are no longer within the FCA. However, a 700-metre section of Lin Ma Hang Road connecting Wang Lek to Lin Ma Hang Village is still classified as a Boundary Patrol Road (BPR) by the Police [1]. The Police have set up a checkpoint at Lin Ma Hang at Police Post No. 12 (Mo Lor Lau) in Ta Kwu Ling, 1,300 metres away from Lin Ma Hang Village, where passengers without a valid Closed Area Permit (CAP) are required to alight. [2] Passengers travelling to and from Lin Ma Hang Village are therefore required to possess a valid CAP. [Remark 1]

This is the most northerly public transport in Hong Kong, with most of the route running parallel to the Hong Kong-Mainland border, with the nearest border fence only 40 metres away, and the northernmost point of the route (near Mo Lor Lau) at latitude 22.5586N is the most northerly point of all the named roads in Hong Kong.

History[]

  • 15 November 1985: The Transport Department (TD) invited open tenders for the right to operate 24 green minibus routes in 11 groups, with this route being one of them. [3]
  • 7 October 1986: Route 19 was introduced between Choi Yuen Estate (the lay-by outside the Sheung Shui Station on Choi Yuen Road eastbound) and Lin Ma Hang to replace the lorry bus service. [4]
  • 31 March 1987: A special trip was introduced between Choi Yuen Estate and Heung Yuen Wai.
  • 28 December 1987: A special trip was introduced between Nga Yiu and San Uk Ling.
  • 29 January 1988: Renumbered as Route 59K and its Sheung Shui Terminus was relocated to Sheung Shui Station. [5]
  • Circa 2014: The Heung Yuen Wai special trips were detoured via Chuk Yuen Tsuen New Village Car Park to tie in with the relocation of the original site of Chuk Yuen Tsuen due to the construction of Heung Yuen Wai Boundary Control Point.
  • 4 January 2016: With the implementation of the third phase of the Government's reduction of the Frontier Closed Area (FCA), most of the roads and villages along the route are no longer within the FCA; however, the 700-metre section of Lin Ma Hang Road connecting Heng Lek to Lin Ma Hang Village is still a Police Boundary Patrol Road, and passengers entering and exiting the village are still required to hold a valid Closed Area Permit (CAP).
  • 30 March 2022: Real-time Arrival Information System was introduced to this route. [6]
