The New Territories Green Minibus (GMB) Route 56K is operated by Golden Way P.L.B. (Scheduled) Service Company Limited (金運專線小巴有限公司) (Passenger Service Licence (PSL) No. 7067C). It runs between Fanling Station and Luk Keng. It is the sole whole-day public transport service at Luk Keng Road.

History[]

  • 1 February 1984: The Transport Department invited public tenders for 11 groups of 20 new green minibus routes, among which this route was grouped with Route 55.[1]
    • The tender for this group of routes was not accepted by the drivers of public light buses (PLBs) operating in the district. Dissatisfied with the takeover of the operation of the North District routes by people from other districts, nearly 40 PLBs went on strike from the morning to 1:00 p.m. on 7 July of the same year[2], and then 50 PLBs went on strike on 24 July, demanding that more prohibited zones be opened up for their operation.[3] TD finally agreed that PLBs could operate to Sha Tau Kok Fishermen's Children School and Ping Yeung, and the incident was temporarily resolved.[4]
  • 25 August 1984: Route 56K entered service.
  • 17 January 1985: As Luen Hing Street in Luen Wo Hui was no longer accessible to Sha Tau Kok Road, Fanling KCR Station-bound trips were diverted via Wo Fung Street and Luen Shing Street to return to Sha Tau Kok Road.
  • 21 February 1987: Two special trips between Fanling KCR Station and Tan Chuk Hang and between Fanling KCR Station and Wo Hang/Man Uk Pin were introduced.
  • 27 September 1987: Entirely replaced KMB Route 69K which ceased service on the same day.
  • 23 April 1990: New whole-day special trips between Fanling KCR Station and Luen Wo Hui were introduced.
  • 7 June 1991: Additional short-working trips between Luk Keng and Sha Tau Kok Market were introduced during morning peak hours.
  • 1 October 1991: The routes between Fanling KCR Station and Wo Hang/Man Uk Pin into two separate routes, namely Wo Hang and Man Uk Pin services.
  • 22 August 1992: As Luen Hing Street and Luen Shing Street could no longer access Sha Tau Kok Road, a diversion was implemented in the vicinity of Luen Wo Hui:
    • Towards Sha Tau Kok: Rerouted to return to Sha Tau Kok Road via L8 road, Wo Tai Street, Luen Hing Street, Luen Wo Road, Luen Shing Street, Wo Tai Road, Luen On Street.
    • To Sheung Shui KCR Station: Rerouted via Luen On Street, Luen Wo Road, Luen Shing Street, Wo Fung Street, Luen Hing Street, Luen Wo Road, Luen Shing Street, Wo Fung Street, Luen Fat Street, Wo Tai Street and L8 road back to Sha Tau Kok Road.
  • 12 June 1993: Rerouted via Wo Lung Street after Luen Hing Street without passing through Luen Wo Road for Luk Keng direction.
  • 4 October 1993: Rerouted to go straight to Luen Fat Street to Wo Tai Street after Luen Wo Road for Fanling KCR Station direction, omitting Luen Shing Street, Wo Fung Street, Luen Hing Street, Luen Wo Road, Luen Shing Street, Wo Fung Street.
  • 9 April 1995: The following new arrangements on the special trips of this route were implemented:
    • Combined with Route 52K to operate daytime service between Fanling KCR Station and Siu Hang Tsuen (now Route 56C);
    • the terminus of special departure between Luen Wo Hui and Fanling KCR Station was relocated to Wo Mun Street Minibus Terminus, and were split intot two routes - Luen Wo Hui service and Wing Fok Centre service:
    • The Luen Wo Hui service would depart from Fanling KCR Station to Sha Tau Kok Road and rerouted via Luen On Street, Wo Tai Street and Wo Mun Street; the return journey would start from Wo Mun Street and would head to Fanling KCR Station via Luen On Street, Wo Tai Street, Luen Cheong Street, Luen Wo Road, Luen Fat Street, Wo Tai Street and Fan Leng Lau Road;
    • The Wing Fok Centre service would depart from Fanling KCR Station and would go via Sha Tau Kok Road to access Fan Leng Lau Road, Wo Muk Road, Wo Tai Street and Wo Mun Street; the return journey would depart from Wo Muk Street to Fanling KCR Station via Luen On Street, Wo Muk Road and Fan Leng Lau Road.
  • 28 August 1995: The Wing Fok Centre service was independently numbered as Route 56A.
  • 8 January 2006: Tan Chuk Hang and Siu Hang Tsuen special trips were renumbered as Routes 56B and 56C respectively.
  • Early 2010s: No longer passed through Luen Hing Street, Wo Lung Street and Luen Shing Street for Luk Keng direction, and the original intermediate stop at Wo Lung Street was relocated to the opposite of 39 Wo Tai Street.
  • 26 September to 11am on 27 October 2018: Due to the serious road damage caused by Typhoon Mangkhut, the road had to be closed for emergency repairs. Luk Keng terminus was temporarily relocated to the road junction at Yim Tso Ha, and at the same time a temporary route T20R was also introduced to supplement the external traffic of Luk Keng.
  • 3 April 2020: The Luk Keng terminus was relocated to the roadside lay-by at Bride's Pool Road from 10am onwards.[5]
  • 25 March 2021: Real-time Arrival Information System was introduced to this route. [6]
  • 5 April 2021: Routing at Luen Wo Hui was further simplified for Luk Keng direction by heading straight via Sha Tau Kok Road - Lung Yeuk Tau and omitting Wo Tai Street, Luen On Street and Wo Muk Road.[7]
  • 23 January 2022: Fare payment by AlipayHK "EasyGO" was accepted.[8]
