The New Territories Green Minibus Route 56B is operated by Golden Way P.L.B. (Scheduled) Service Company Limited (金運專線小巴有限公司) (Passenger Service Licence (PSL) No. 7067C) under Ma Ah Muk. It runs between Fanling Station and Tan Chuk Hang, which is a supplementary service to Route 56K.

History[]

  • 8 January 2006: The special trip of Route 56K running between Fanling Station and Tan Chuk Hang was renumbered as 56B.
  • Early 2010: The Tan Chuk Hang bound routing from Luen Wo Hui was simplified by not entering Luen Hing Street, Wo Lung Street and Luen Shing Street, and the original stop at Wo Lung Street was relocated to opposite to No. 39, Wo Tai Street.
  • 13 November 2020: Service hours on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays were extended, and new departures at 22:10 from Fanling Station and 22:35 from Tan Chuk Hang were introduced on a trial basis[1]. The trial arrangement for Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays was formally implemented from 4 November 2023 onwards, while the trial arrangement for Fridays was terminated from the same date.[2]
  • 25 March 2021: Real-time Arrival Information System was introduced to this route. [3]
  • 5 April 2021: The Tan Chuk Hang bound routing at Luen Wo Hui was further simplified by heading straight along Sha Tau Kok Road - Lung Yeuk Tau.[4]
  • 23 January 2022: Fare payment by AlipayHK "EasyGO" was accepted.[5]

  • Passengers must use the same Octopus Card to pay the fare for both the minibus and MTR to enjoy the above-mentioned interchange concession.
  • Passengers can enjoy the above interchange concession at any MTR station / minibus stop that connects to the second leg of the route.
  • The MTR ride does not apply to Light Rail, Airport Express, High Speed Rail, MTR Bus and MTR Feeder Bus services.
  • The MTR interchange concession only applies to paid rides. Unless otherwise specified, passengers using the Monthly Pass Enhanced or Disneyland Resort Line Monthly Pass (including those who have paid First Class Supplementary Fare) cannot enjoy this concession when taking the MTR at designated stations; however, if Enhanced Monthly Pass or Disneyland Resort Line Monthly Ticket holders take paid rides outside the designated stations, the concession still applies.
  • If passengers have just used the same Octopus Card for the Airport Express "Free MTR Connection," they cannot simultaneously enjoy the MTR interchange concession.
  • If both "MTR Fare Saver" and "MTR Interchange Concession" are applicable, passengers can only enjoy one of the higher discounts.
  • Higher concession amounts are available for certain GMB routes at designated MTR stations.

According to the Transport Department's Schedule of Services, this route, together with routes 56C and 56K, requires a total of 8 minibuses to provide service, of which 1 is a 19-seater minibus. It has a carrying capacity of not less than 48 passengers in the peak hour.

Currently this route, as well as New Territories Routes 55K, 56A, 56C and 56K have a total of 48 Toyota Coaster, including 22 16-seater minibuses and 26 19-seater minibuses Minibus on route 56A will support the operations of this route.

Ridership[]

While village houses have been completed one after another along the service scope of Route 56B, the frequency of the service fails to cope with passenger demand, making it difficult for passengers to board from Sze Tau Leng Tsuen.[17]

According to the LegCo or District Council documents, the passengers capacity of this route is as follows:

  • 2019: The daily patronage of the route group to which it belongs is 21,800.[18]
  • 2020:[19]
    • February: A field survey was conducted at Tan Chuk Hang between 7:00 am and 9:00 am, and the average occupancy rate was about 40%;
    • June: A field survey was conducted at Fanling Station from 6pm to 8pm, with an average occupancy rate of about 75%.
  • 2023: The special departure from Fanling Station at 10:10 pm and from Sze Tau Leng at 10:35 pm on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays recorded an average of only about four and one passenger respectively.[20]

  1. Numbers placed after the model Toyota Coaster (if any) are only used within the transport enthusiasts, others (including the industry) does not use such names.
  2. The 3rd generation was originally a vehicle on PLB Northern Island Trunk Route and was changed to serve on Hong Kong Maxicab, until May 2005 before retirement.
  3. That 5LS2 was originally a vehicle on Express Top Industries' New Territories Route 44A and was changed to serve on Sheung Shui P.L.B. in March 2016, until August 2018 before retirement.
