The New Territories Green Minibus (GMB) Route 55K is operated by Golden Way P.L.B. (Scheduled) Service Company Limited (金運專線小巴有限公司) (Passenger Service Licence (PSL) No. 7067C). It runs between Sheung Shui Minibus Terminus and Sha Tau Kok (Shun Lung Street), via Tin Ping Estate (Jockey Club Road), Luen Wo Hui, Lung Yeuk Tau, Ma Mei Ha, Wo Hang and Shek Chung Au. It is the sole GMB route that serves the Frontier Closed Area without connecting to any boundary control points.
Route 55K overlaps largely with KMB Route 78K, with the difference being that it passes through San Wan Road and detours via Fanling Station.
History[]
- 1 February 1984: The Transport Department invited public tenders for 11 groups of 20 new green minibus routes, among which this route was grouped with Route 56K.[1]
- The tender for this group of routes was not accepted by the drivers of public light buses (PLBs) operating in the district. Dissatisfied with the takeover of the operation of the North District routes by people from other districts, nearly 40 PLBs went on strike from the morning to 1:00 p.m. on 7 July of the same year[2], and then 50 PLBs went on strike on 24 July, demanding that more prohibited zones be opened up for their operation.[3] TD finally agreed that PLBs could operate to Sha Tau Kok Fishermen's Children School and Ping Yeung, and the incident was temporarily resolved.[4]
- 21 August 1984: Route 55 entered service, running between Shek Wu Hui (San Fat Street) and Sha Tau Kok (Shun Hing Street) (Sha Tau Kok Market).
- In the afternoon of the same day, PLB drivers launched another slow-moving action to protest against the Transport Department's failure to honour its promise to provide minibus stops at Sha Tau Kok and Ping Yeung, and to allow green minibuses to start service two days earlier, and five of them were arrested by the Police for road obstruction.[5]
- 17 January 1985: As Luen Hing Street in Luen Wo Hui was no longer accessible to Sha Tau Kok Road, Fanling KCR Station-bound trips were diverted via Wo Fung Street and Luen Shing Street to return to Sha Tau Kok Road.
- 28 March 1986: Rerouted via Lung Sum Avenue for Jockey Club Road after San Fung Avenue for Sha Tau Kok direction; and rerouted via Fu Hing Street, San Fung Avenue and Lung Sum Avenue after Jockey Club Road to return to Terminus for Sheung Shui direction.
- 29 January 1988: Renumbered as Route 55K and its Sheung Shui terminus was relocated to Sheung Shui KCR Station Minibus Terminus.[6]
- 1 November 1988: Rerouted directly from Lung Sum Road to Jockey Club Road and no longer passed through San Fat Street, Fu Hing Street and San Fung Avenue for Sha Tau Kok direction; rerouted to return to the terminus via San Fat Street to Lung Sum Avenue after Fu Hing Street and no longer via San Fung Avenue due to the change in traffic direction of San Fat Street.
- 6 December 1988: Special departure between Sheung Shui KCR Station Minibus Terminus and Luen Wo Hui between 06:00 and 20:00 daily was introduced and the last departure of the main route was also extended by 90 minutes.
- 6 May 1989: Sha Tau Kok terminus was relocated to the bus terminus to the west of Shun Lung Street.
- 17 July 1989: Sha Tau Kok-bound trips, from Lung Sum Road to Jockey Club Road, were diverted to return to Lung Sum Avenue via San Shing Avenue, Fu Hing Street and San Fat Street. This diversion was cancelled on 23 April 1990 and the original routing was resumed.
- 22 August 1992: As Luen Hing Street and Luen Shing Street could no longer access Sha Tau Kok Road, a diversion was implemented in the vicinity of Luen Wo Hui:
- Towards Sha Tau Kok: Rerouted to return to Sha Tau Kok Road via L8 road, Wo Tai Street, Luen Hing Street, Luen Wo Road, Luen Shing Street, Wo Tai Road, Luen On Street.
- To Sheung Shui KCR Station: Rerouted via Luen On Street, Luen Wo Road, Luen Shing Street, Wo Fung Street, Luen Hing Street, Luen Wo Road, Luen Shing Street, Wo Fung Street, Luen Fat Street, Wo Tai Street and L8 road back to Sha Tau Kok Road.
- 12 June 1993: Rerouted via Wo Lung Street after Luen Hing Street without passing through Luen Wo Road for Sha Tau Kok direction.
- 4 October 1993: Rerouted to go straight to Luen Fat Street to Wo Tai Street after Luen Wo Road for Sheung Shui KCR Station direction, omitting Luen Shing Street, Wo Fung Street, Luen Hing Street, Luen Wo Road, Luen Shing Street, Wo Fung Street.
- 25 September 2011: No longer passed through Luen Hing Street, Wo Lung Street and Luen Shing Street for Sha Tau Kok direction, and the original intermediate stop at Wo Lung Street was relocated to the opposite of 39 Wo Tai Street.
- 15 February 2012: In line with the Government's reduction of the Frontier Closed Area (FCA), the section of Sha Tau Kok Road - Shek Chung Au between Tong To and Tam Shui Hang is no longer within the FCA, and the stops along the route are open for loading/unloading by all. However, the Sha Tau Kok terminus and Sha Tau Kok Town remain within the FCA.[7][8]
- 18 October 2015: Alterations to routing were made:[9]
- Rerouted via Wo Muk Road for Sha Tau Kok direction after crossing Fan Leng Lau Road, no longer passing through Wo Tai Street.
- Rerouted via Wo Muk Road for Sheung Shui Station direction after crossing Luen On Street, no longer passing through the area of Luen Wo Road; and rerouted via Lung Sum Avenue when heading to the junction of Jockey Club Road and Lung Sum Avenue, no longer passing through Fu Hing Street and San Fat Street.
- 27 May 2019: Special departures at 07:30 and 08:00 every Mondays to Fridays from Sha Tau Kok to Sheung Shui Station via Lung Shan Tunnel and Fanling Highway were introduced. [10]
- 25 March 2021: Real-time Arrival Information System was introduced to this route. [11]
- 23 January 2022: Fare payment by AlipayHK "EasyGO" was accepted.[12]

Ridership[]
This route overlaps with KMB Route 78K, which also passes through Sha Tau Kok Road, but with the vehicle-wave strategy, the latter has snatched away a lot of passengers from the route and the latter's source of passengers is mainly from Fanling Station, which is not served by this route. In addition, the section of this route between Sheung Shui and Luen Wo Hui is also able to attract local customers with cheap section fares.
According to the data from Transport Department, the ridership of this route is as follows:
- Early 2019: 21,800 passengers.[13]
