The New Territories Green Minibus Route 46 is operated by Yau Man Investment Limited (友文投資有限公司) (Passenger Service Licence (PSL) No. 8937C). It runs netween Fu Tai Estate and Tuen Mun Town Centre, via Lingnan University, MTR Siu Hong Station, Prime View Garden and San Hui.
This route is officially a circular route as listed in the according to Transport Department's Schedule of Services, but under any circumstances, all passengers must alight after the vehicle has arrived at Tuen Mun Town Centre, therefore it belongs to a fake circular route.
History[]
To solve the worsening traffic congestion problem before the completion of the Tuen Mun Road Tai Lam section of the climbing route, Transport Department planned to introduce two green minibus routes in 1995 providing feeder services to the Tuen Mun Ferry Pier, of which this route was one.[1]
- 8 December 1995: The Transport Department (TD) invited open tenders for operating rights of 12 groups with 17 new green minibus (GMB) routes, in which this route was placed in a single group.[2]
- 1997: Route 46 entered service, running between Tuen Mun Ferry Pier and Lingnan College (i.e. current Lingnan University; the terminus was located at Fu Tei Road at that time), and detoured via King Fung Path.
- July 1999: Truncated from Tuen Mun Ferry Pier to Tuen Mun Town Centre.
- 2001:
- The terminus was relocated from Lingnan University to Fu Tai Estate;
- Omitted King Fung Path and a supplementary Route 46A was introduced to serve the area.
- 20 December 2003: The Round trip detours via West Rail Line Siu Hong Station (South) Public Transport Interchange and additional Interchange Discount with Kowloon Canton West Railway was introduced.[3]
- 5 November 2008: An additional minibus will be introduces at an average frequency of 4 to 5 minutes during peak hours.[4]
- 2 October 2009: A new special departure from Lingnan University to Tuen Mun Town Centre was introduced with the service time from 07:00 to 10:00 and a 15-minute interval during Mondays to Fridays, following the cancellation of illegal resident bus service between Parkland Villas and Tuen Mun Town Centre with effect from 1 October.[5][6]
- The special departure was operated until 1 June 2010, when it ceased operations after the launching of Resident Bus Route NR763 by Sun Bus serving Parkland Villas.
- 28 October 2019: Departures from Tuen Mun Town Centre to Fu Tai Estate omitting San Hui were individually numbered 46X.[7]
- 30 March 2022: Real-time Arrival Information System was introduced to this route.[8]

Remarks[]
Due to the heavy patronage at Tuen Mun Town Centre, the minibus is often full when it departs. In this connection, this route operates additional special trips to Tuen Mun Town Centre for diverting passengers, and such trips will return to the Town Centre Terminus directly after dropping off passengers at Fu Tai Estate.[16]For easier recognition of passengers and avoiding misunderstanding, the operators has enhanced the signage on special trips, such as placing cardboards indicating a special trip.
Signs on minibuses on prohibition on stopping at non-official stops and reminder on notifying the driver for alighting at Siu Hong Station
Some minibuses on this route had picked up and dropped off passengers at some unofficial stops. Due to safety reasons, the operator posted a notice "Drivers who pick up and drop off passengers at non-official stops resulting in enforcement actions are liable for their own responsibility" (非站頭上落客 抄牌司機自負) inside the minibus in 2009, requiring passengers and drivers to follow the stops for picking up and dropping off passengers.
Due to the large number of passengers, some trips (the notices indicate noon on weekdays and daytime on holidays) at Fu Tai Estate will reserve seats to facilitate boarding by passengers from Ying Tai House (4 seats for 16-seater minibuses and 5 seats for 19-seater minibuses), and the same restriction also applies to Route 46X.
As earlier lane-cutting is required for trips to and from MTR Siu Hong Station (South), due to the fact that some passengers often raise their voices to the driver at a later time and are unable to cut the lane, the operator has put up notices in the compartments reminding passengers to notify the driver well in advance for alighting at Siu Hong Station since 2011. Although these notices have disappeared with the transfer of some vehicles out of the series, the restriction is still in place.
Ridership[]
This route overlapped with MTR Bus Route K51 but attracted a high patronage due to its faster journey and more convenient stops in the town centre than buses.
Parkland Villas is also a major patronage source of this route, and a special service from Parkland Villas has been introduced to replace the illegal resident bus service between the estate and Tuen Mun Town Centre. Currently, the estate has successfully bid for Resident Bus Route NR763, and the demand for this route is lower than before.
