Ridership[]

Route 409 effectively serves passengers travelling between MTR Tsing Yi Station and Tsuen Wan. However, during the morning peak hours, minibuses usually reach full capacity by the time it arrives at the Tsing Yi terminus, often leaving residents around Fung Shue Wo Road and Cheung Hang Estate struggling to find a seat. To address this issue, the operator plans to modify the vehicle schedule, allowing for direct pickups at the mid-stop on Fung Shue Wo Road during busy weekday mornings, within the constraints of available resources.[18][19][20]Subject to available resources, the operator will also deploy vehicles to pick up passengers directly at the en-route stops along Fung Shue Wo Road during weekday morning peak hours.[21]

Related incidents[]

  • 24 April 2017: At around 2:00 p.m., a Toyota Coaster (FS7707) en route to Cheung Hang (Hang Mei Street) struck a woman who had just exited a vehicle at the Cheung Hang Shopping Centre on Liu To Road in Tsing Yi.[22] Tragically, she passed away on the 26th[23]. The driver of a replacement minibus was subsequently arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving resulting in serious injury.
  • 29 September 2019: At around 5:45 p.m., a driver on a Toyota Coaster (MC3541) operating on the route towards Tsuen Wan verbally assaulted passengers with foul language while driving. When the vehicle reached St. Paul's Village on Tsing King Road, a passenger who had disembarked confronted the driver, leading to an altercation in which the driver exited the vehicle wielding scissors and assaulted the passenger, which was captured on video by witnesses.[24] Following the event, reports indicated that the driver was dismissed from his position.[25]
  • 27 October 2020: At around 7:00 p.m., a Toyota Coaster minibus (MB7928) caught fire on Tsing King Road near St. Paul Village. Fortunately, there were no injuries, but the minibus sustained severe damage from the blaze[26][27]. Due to the extent of the damage, the vehicle was deemed irreparable and retired early. Its license plate was later reassigned to a new seventh-generation 19-seater LPG minibus.
    • December 2020: In response to inquiries from the Kwai Tsing District Council regarding the incidents, the Transport Department confirmed that following an investigation, the Fire Services Department concluded that the cause of the fire remains unknown but classified it as an isolated incident.[28]
Situation after the incident

Situation after the incident

  • 12 September 2024: At around 9 am, a Toyota Coaster (RU4005) travelling towards Cheung Hang moved into the left lane near Tai Wo Hau Station and decelerated. Unfortunately, a private car following closely behind was unable to stop in time, resulting in a collision with the minibus. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the incident.
