The New Territories Green Minibus Route 1 is operated by Sai Kung P.L.B. (Maxicab) (No. 1 & 2) Company Limited (西貢(1、2號)(專線)小巴有限公司) (Passenger Service Licence (PSL) No. 4655C). It runs between Sai Kung Pier and Telford Gardens, via Pak Sha Wan, Ho Chung, Pik Uk, Tseng Lan Shue, Choi Wan Estate and MTR Choi Hung Station.

As the frequency of this route is lower than that of the short-working Route 1A, which has an overlapping service area, the driver on this route will ask passengers travelling to MTR Choi Hung Station to switch to Route 1A instead of boarding, so as to avoid too many short-haul passengers occupying the seats of the minibus, which would prevent the passengers who are actually travelling to Kowloon Bay from boarding the minibus.

This route was one of the first batch of GMB routes in the New Territories[1] which came into service in 1979.

History[]

  • 8 June 1979: The Transport Department invited public tenders for the right to operate 33 new GMB routes in 16 groups, which were grouped with Route 2 in the same group.[2]
  • 18 November 1979: Route 1 entered service, running between Sai Kung and Telford Gardens, and a short-working route between Sai Kung and Choi Hung (Luk Lau Avenue) was also launched at the same time.
    • The route was operated by 11 minibuses at the time of its introduction, and was later increased to 43[3] and 58 during peak hours.[4]
  • March 1981: Sai Kung Terminus moved from Yee Chun Street to Sai Kung Bus Terminus.
  • 21 October 1986: Sai Kung Terminus was further relocated to the newly built minibus terminus at Fuk Man Road.
  • 15 January 1987: Overnight trips running circular between Sai Kung and Choi Hung were introduced.
  • 21 September 1993: The terminus of Choi Hung short-working trips was relocated from Luk Lau Avenue to Choi Hung Public Transport Interchange, and for Sai Kung bound, when there was traffic congestion between 07:00 and 21:00, the trips could return to Clear Water Bay Road via Choi Hung Estate Access Road and Prince Edward Road East.
  • 21 March 1994: A special morning service from Pak Sha Wan to Choi Hung was introduced.
  • 1997: Short-working trips to and from Choi Hung were individually numbered as 1A, while overnight trips were numbered as Route 1S.
  • 16 July 2000: Short-haul trips to/from Choi Hung MTR Station were individually numbered as 1M.
  • 1 May 2001: Octopus fare payment was accepted.
  • 10 July 2002: Rerouted via New Hiram's Highway which was opened to traffic on that day for Sai Kung Pier direction.[5]
  • 12 July 2010: The following changes are made for Sai Kung Pier direction:
    • After departure from Telford Garden, the route was rerouted via Telford Garden access, flyover, Tai Yip Street, Hong Tak Road and Kwun Tong Road return to original routing;
    • Departures from Choi Hung Interchange at 17:00 - 21:00 on Mondays to Fridays, and from 13:20 - 21:00 on Saturdays and Public Holidays would depart from Choi Hung Interchange and rerouted via Clear Water Bay Road to Sai Kung Pier directly without going through Lung Cheung Road, Hammer Hill Road, Choi Hung Interchange, Choi Hung Road, Hammer Hill Road, Hammer Hill Road Flyover, Hammer Hill Road, Interchange, Hammer Hill Road, slip road, Lung Cheung Road, and not stopping at Ngau Chi Wan Village (MTR Choi Hung Station).[6]
  • 20 February 2011: Interchange concession with MTR was introduced.[7]
  • 1 May 2013: Interchange concession with MTR was cancelled. [8]
  • 25 June 2021: Real-time Arrival Information System was introduced to this route.[9]
