Nathan Road (彌敦道) starts from Salisbury Road in Tsim Sha Tsui in the south and ends at the junction of Boundary Street and Cheung Sha Wan Road in Mong Kok in the north, with a total length of 3.5km. It is one of the main roads from Yau Tsim Mong District to the Kowloon Peninsula.
A large number of buses pass through the entire section of Nathan Road, among which NLB Route 1R (northbound), KMB Routes 6, 35A, 35X, 234X, N241, Citybus Routes N21, N21A and NA20 also pass through the entire section of Nathan Road.
History[]
Nathan Road, formerly known as Robinson Road, was built by British Army engineers in 1860. At that time, it was only a small alley, from Middle Road to Austin Road, which was only a section of Tsim Sha Tsui. In 1904, the then Governor of Hong Kong, Sir Nathan, decided to open up the Kowloon Peninsula, build the Kowloon-Canton Railway (British Section) (now the East Rail Line), and widened Robinson Road in Kowloon to six lanes and extend it to Waterloo Road. In 1909, the Hong Kong government renamed Robinson Road in Kowloon to "Nathan Road" to avoid confusion with Robinson Road in Hong Kong Island.
On the other hand, King George V was crowned in 1911, and the section from Waterloo Road to Argyle Street was named "Coronation Road". In 1926, the Hong Kong government completed the leveling project of the Kowloon Peninsula and Coronation Road was extended to Boundary Street. At this time, the government also merged the two streets into the current Nathan Road. Since then, Nathan Road has played an important role in the development history of Hong Kong.
Flourish[]
Over the years, commerce has flourished along Nathan Road, with numerous commercial buildings and shops making it a must-see for domestic and foreign tourists.
From 1976 to 1982, due to the construction of the Mass Transit Railway, some sections of Nathan Road were changed to one-way southbound. Dozens of routes needed to be rerouted, most of which were diverted through Shanghai Street, which was still a two-way road at that time.
In order to cope with a series of projects such as the KCR Tsim Sha Tsui Extension, the MTR Tsim Sha Tsui Station and the Salisbury Road Tunnel, the Tsim Sha Tsui section of Nathan Road has implemented a series of diversion measures since 2002, and the bus stops had to also be temporarily relocated.
As early as 2007, the Transport Department had planned to cancel the exclusive right turn for northbound buses from Nathan Road to Mong Kok Road to reduce road competition between people and vehicles. Starting from the first departure on 6 March, 2009, routes 95, 203, N216, N271 and N281 will not be able to turn right from Nathan Road to Mong Kok Road. Instead, they will turn left to Argyle Street, Reclamation Street and then Mong Kok Road, where they would return to their original routing. There are routes and intermediate stops that were not affected.
Currently, the section of Nathan Road between Prince Edward Road West and Mong Kok Road is part of the Mong Kok Franchised Bus Low Emission Xone established by the Hong Kong government. Only Euro IV or above buses are allowed to travel there. In addition, the Transport Department has set a quota for the section of Nathan Road located north of Jordan Road to limit the number of franchised buses entering this section.
Bus Stops[]
The Transport Department reorganised the bus stops of the entirety of Nathan Road between February and March 2000, involving 97 Bus Routes running through Nathan Road.[1]. The department appropriately arranges the route combination for each station based on the destination of each route and the location and geographical environment of each bus stop, and cancels the near distance bus stop.
The restructuring plan was carried out in two phases. The first phase involves the 23 sets of bus stops on the northbound side of Nathan Road and was implemented on 27 February; the second phase involves the 24 sets of bus stops on the southbound side of Nathan Road and was implemented on 5 March[2]. After the bus stop reorganization, the number of bus stops per hour during Peak Hours for each route has been reduced from 6,300 to 5,400, accounting for approximately 14% of the total. The Transport Department conducted a survey after the implementation of the bus stop reorganization plan at Nathan Road. The results showed that the bus journey time on Nathan Road during peak hours was reduced by about 6 to 7 minutes on average, or about 20%. The results were satisfactory.
