The defunct Hong Kong Island Urban Bus Route 82M was operated by New World First Bus. It ran circular between Chai Wan Station and Siu Sai Wan (Island Resort), and is a short-haul special trip of Route 82 which was only available from Mondays to Fridays from the morning peak hours to 4:00 pm.

To optimise the use of resources, Route 82M was the first non-tourist franchised bus route in Hong Kong to use open-top buses of Rickshaw Sightseeing Bus for some of its morning peak hour trips.

History[]

Commencing background[]

82M was a route proposed in the 2010-2011 Bus Route Dveelopment Programme, which was reconfigured from the original Route 84M to facilitate the deployment of vehicles for the new route 82X. This route was initially proposed to serve only the weekday morning peak hours from Siu Sai Wan (Lam Wan Peninsula) to Chai Wan Station without passing through Fullview Garden and was to be served by two open-top buses. [1]However, the proposal was opposed by the relevant District Council members due to the drastic reduction in service hours; however, information on this route and Route 82X has been available in NWFB's electronic route sign library since around March 2010.

Subsequently, the reorganisation plan was discussed again at the Public Transport Liaison Group of the Eastern District District Council in late April 2010, during which NWFB put forward a revised proposal, which included:

  • Deploying an additional non-open-top bus to serve the area;
  • Extending the service hours to 16:30;
  • At the same time, the routing was revised to be in line with the original Route 84M, but without stopping at the various stops along the section Chai Wan Road from Yue Wan Estate to Wan Tsui Market;
  • The special departure originally operated from Harmony Garden was retained.

However, under the above proposal, Route 82X would need to reduce one bus before the afternoon peak hour to reduce frequency. [2][3] Although the service hours and frequency of the new scheme still differed from the level of the original Route 84M, the proposal was eventually supported and approved by the District Council.

Brief history of operation[]

  • 2010 23 August: 82M service was introduced to replace the service of Route 84M. Unlike the service details listed in the above amendment proposal, it was changed to start from Chai Wan Station and return via Island Resort. [4][5]
  • 30 September 2010: The non-stopping arrangement at "Hiu Tsui Street" stop on Siu Sai Wan Road for trips departing from Chai Wan Station before 09:00 were cancelled, so that all regular trips stopped there. [6]
  • 3 December 2010: All trips to Chai Wan Station added a stop at "Wan Tsui Market" on Chai Wan Road.
  • 14 January 2013: For trips departing from Chai Wan Station at or before 09:00, an additional stop at "Lok Hin Terrace" on Chai Wan Road was provided on the return trip. [7]
  • 31 August 2018: "Next Bus "Real-time arrival time enquiry service was added. [8]
  • 2 August 2021: Special departures from Harmony Garden were cancelled. [9][10]
  • 17 January 2022: Due to the outbreak of the fifth wave of COVID-19 pandemic, service was curtailed to the morning peak hour and was later fully suspended from 21 February, until 21 April when limited service was resumed. [11][12][13]
  • 15 August 2022: Service was cancelled (last service day was 12 August), and was replaced by a new two-way section fare of Route 82 from Siu Sai Wan (Island Resort) to Chak Tsui House Wan Tsui Estate starting from the same day. [14][15]
