The New Territories Bus Route B2 is operated by New Lantao Bus and is one of the Shenzhen West Express routes. It runs between Yuen Long MTR Station and Shenzhen Bay Port, via Yuen Long Town, Ping Shan, Hung Shui Kiu, and Lam Tei. It is the first NLB route to have a catchment area entirely outside of Lantau Island.
History[]
Opening background[]
As early as in early 2007, the Government invited tenders through an open tender for the operation of two boundary crossing routes from Tuen Mun Ferry Pier and West Rail Yuen Long Station to Shenzhen Bay Port, and one green minibus (GMB) route to and from Tin Shui Wai.
In late June 2007, the Transport Department announced that the New Lantao Bus had won the bid for the Yuen Long-bound route [1] with the route numbered B2.
Route change history[]
- 1 July 2007: The Shenzhen Bay Port was officially opened to traffic and NLB commenced the "Shenzhen West Express" Route B2 between Shenzhen Bay Port and Yuen Long Station via Shenzhen Bay Bridge, Kong Sham Western Highway, Yuen Long Highway, Hung Tin Road, Tin Shui Wai Station, Tin Yiu Road, Tin Tsz Estate and Yuen Long Main Road[2]. A two-way section fare from Shenzhen Bay to Tin Shui Wai was set up. However, as the Octopus fare collection system of NLB could not cope with the two-way section fare arrangement of refunding a portion of the fare on alighting, the Yuen Long direction was then charged by the "two-stage ticket" mode pioneered by the franchised bus routes in Hong Kong, which means that the same journey is divided into two segments to be charged on boarding and alighting respectively.
- 21 July 2007: Changed to pay on alighting for Yuen Long Station direction so that the Octopus Same Day Return Discount can be calculated correctly; when passengers pay the fare when alighting from the bus, the bus captain will adjust the Octopus fare processor to deduct different fares according to the location.
- 26 July 2008: Service in Tin Shui Wai was replaced by the newly commissioned Route B2P on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.
- 10 January 2009: Headways via Hung Shui Kiu and Lam Tei on Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays were enhanced to tie in with the discontinuation of services of the vicnity of Route B2P. [3]
- 13 July 2009: Rerouted via Castle Peak Road (Lam Tei to Yuen Long sections) daily to tie in with the upgrading of Route B2P to a daily service. [4]
- In addition, in the past, if the bus was full and passengers could not pay at the front of the bus, the bus driver could only open the door of the bus to allow passengers to get off the bus first and then pay at the front of the bus; however, there were some passengers who were dishonest and left the bus without paying the fare, which resulted in the company's loss [5]. Therefore, the "2-stage fare" mode was resumed for the Yuen Long Station direction, i.e. the same journey is divided into two sections, and the fare is charged at the time of boarding and alighting respectively [6]. Passengers pay $8.5 when boarding and $3.5 when alighting after crossing Hung Shui Kiu Stop.
- 24 August 2014: The drop-off only arrangement at various stops along the route from Lam Tei to Kuk Ting Street for Yuen Long Station direction was cancelled. [7]
- 1 March 2017: Estimated Time of Bus Arrival Enquiry Service (ETA) enquiry service was introduced to this route.[8]
- 18 September 2017: A new stop "Uptown" was added on Castle Peak Road - Hung Shui Kiu for Shenzhen Bay Port direction. [9][10]
- 9 December 2020: The two-stage fare arrangement was cancelled, and passengers who need to use two-way section fares are required to inform the bus captain to adjust the Octopus farebox before boarding the bus.
- 2020 to 2023: Service changes were made due to the novel coronavirus pandemic:
- 21 March 2022: The last bus time was advanced to 16:30 for Shenzhen Bay Port, whereas that to 18:15 for Yuen Long Station direction.[14]
- 22 March 2022: The last bus time was advanced to 16:15 for Shenzhen Bay Port direction.[15][16]
- 8 July 2022: The last bus to Shenzhen Bay Port was delayed to 17:30, whereas that to Yuen Long Station was delayed to 20:15.[17][18]
- 8 August 2022: In view of the change of service hours for nucleic acid testing at Shenzhen Bay Port to 08:00 - 18:30, the first bus to Shenzhen Bay Port was advanced to 07:30, and the first bus to Yuen Long Station was advanced to 08:15.[19][20]
- 14 December 2022: The Government cancelled the "Test Pending" arrangement for rapid nucleic acid testing at Shenzhen Bay Port for Shenzhen-bound travellers on the previous day, the first bus time for the return direction was postponed by one hour, and the last bus time for Shenzhen Bay Port wdirection was postponed to 18:30.[21][22]
- 8 January 2023: In view of the resumption of normal opening hours of Shenzhen Bay Port, the normal service hours for the return direction was resumed.[23]
