The North-South Lantau Ordinary Bus Route[Remark 1] A35 is operated by New Lantao Bus (NLB). It runs between Mui Wo Ferry Pier and the HZMB Hong Kong Port during the morning, afternoon and evening peak hours every day only, via Pui O, Cheung Sha, Tong Fuk, Pak Kung Au, Tung Chung Town Centre, Cathay City, Airport Passenger Terminal and SKYCITY.

Although NLB advertises that Route A35 is an "Airport Route", as there is no relevant classification in the Schedule of Routes Order of NLB, this route is actually categorised as a "North-South Lantau Ordinary Bus Route" group, with "Weekday Fare" and "Holiday Fare" like other bus routes serving South Lantau, but it is not covered by the Government's Public Transport Fare Concession Scheme for the Elderly and Eligible Persons with Disabilities, which is more or less the same as the other "A" routes.

However, Route A35 runs through the Airport Logistics Area and Tung Chung and omits the Drop-off Point at Airport Passenger Terminal Departures Kerb and the Ground Transportation Centre Bus Terminus, and is even the sole airport bus route that provides service only during peak hours at the moment.

History[]

The main article of this section is Transport Study for the New Airport.
  • 6 July 1998: NLB commenced a new route A35 between Mui Wo Ferry Pier and the Airport  (Ground Transportation Centre)[1] to coincide with the opening of the Hong Kong International Airport.
  • 11 July 1998: The Airport terminus was relocated to the roadside parking outside the Passenger Terminal Building to tie in with the reorganisation of stops at the bus terminus of the Ground Transportation Centre.
  • Unknown: Diverted via Chek Lap Kok South Road to/from Chun Wan Road, omitting a section of Scenic Road, near Aviation Fuel Tank Farm, Chun Yue Road and Chun Wan Road South.
  • 1 June 2001: Buses towards Mui Wo Ferry Pier were detoured via Tung Chung Town Centre Bus Terminus.
  • 5 December 2004 to 27 February 2005: A $2.0 Octopus Interchange Concession with Tung Chung Line on Sundays and Public Holidays was introduced during the period.
  • 29 September 2006: the following arrangements were implemented:[2]
    • The fare structure of Airport-bound journeys were changed; passengers should first pay the fare for Tung Chung-bound journeys when boarding the bus, and should pay the fare for the Tung Chung Town Centre - Airport section of the journey when alighting from the bus if they wish to go to the stops at Airport;
    • Both directions were diverted via Scenic Road between Scenic Hill to and from Cathay City, omitting Chun Wan Road;
    • Detoured via Chung Yan Road off Yat Tung Estate for Airport direction.
  • 21 October 2006: Individual headways were detoured via Mui Wo Old Town and Tung Chung Town Centre:
    • Departures at 05:35 and 06:35 from Mui Wo were detoured via Tung Chung Town Centre, while departures at 16:30 were detoured via Mui Wo Old Town;
    • Departures at 06:25 from the Airport via Mui Wo Old Town.[3]
  • 7 January 2007: No longer detoured via Chung Yan Road off Yat Tung Estate for Airport direction.[4]
  • 16 November 2008: NLB pointed out that the Route A35 was losing $5 million a year, and that most of the time there were only 3 to 4 passengers on each bus destined for the Airport,[5] and that it had to reduce headways to reduce costs, from the original 38 per day to only 10 per day.[6]
  • 6 February 2009: Buses on both bounds were diverted to the new section of Tung Chung Road between Pak Kung Au and San Shek Wan instead of the old section of South Lantau Road in Cheung Sha, to tie in with the opening of the new and improved Tung Chung Road to traffic. However both directions still detoured via Cheung Sha and Tong Fuk, drastically increasing the travelling distance to 14.6 km.[7][8]
  • 2 November 2013: The bus stop "Tung Chung Crescent" on Shun Tung Road was cancelled for Airport direction due to low utilisation.
  • 20 April 2015: The Tung Chung Town Centre Bus Terminus stop was temporarily cancelled and relocated to Tung Chung Temporary Bus Terminus due to the Citygate expansion project.[9]
  • 30 March 2017: Starting from 2:30pm, buses were diverted via Cheong Hong Road underneath the bridge section of Cheong Tat Road to "Regal Airport Hotel" bus stop for Tung Chung Station direction, and the "Car Park 4" bus stop was cancelled to tie in with the closure of the section of Cheong Tat Road outside the Government Lounge Carpark for the Airport Passenger Terminal Building extension.[10][11]
  • 1 March 2017: Estimated Time of Bus Arrival Enquiry Service (ETA) enquiry service was introduced to this route.[12]
  • 24 October 2018: To tie in with the commissioning of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB), service was extended to the HZMB Hong Kon Port from 9:00am that day onwards, with the fares for the whole journey increased and the departure times revised.[13]
  • 27 April 2019: Tung Chung Terminus was relocated back to Tung Chung Town Centre to coincide with the completion of the stop's redevelopment.[14]
  • 20 April 2020: A new cash section fare was introduced temporarily from HZMB Hong Kong Port to Airport (Passenger Terminal Building) until 7 January 2023 in response to the temporary suspension of service on Route B4 due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.[15][16][17][18]
  • 17 December 2023: Both directions were detoured via Skycity Transport Terminal.[19]

Ridership[]

The demand for travelling between South Lantau and the airport is on the low side, and the passenger base of this route is concentrated in the section between Mui Wo and Tung Chung, but it is more meandering than Route 3M with an overlapping catchment area, and it has been operating in the red for many years, and buses are often empty. As a result, the NLB has proposed a number of service reductions; firstly the proposal to merge with Route 13 (now Route 3M) and truncation to the old pier in Tung Chung in January 2001, but the District Council objected to the merger; and then the proposal to switch to using 19-seater buses during off-peak hours (from 09:30 to 15:30, and after 20:00) in March of the same year, but this proposal was not implemented in the end.[20]

NLB changed the fare structure of this route on 29 September 2006 so that passengers travelling to Tung Chung or other areas in South Lantau only need to pay lower fares, in an attempt to attract short-distance passengers, but the overall fare is still higher than that of Routes 3M and 11, etc. The operation of this route continues to be poor, and even with the reduction in frequency and cost, it is still incurring losses. NLB had proposed cancelling the route, but opposition from residents and a motorcade at the Airport[21] forced NLB to shelve the plan.

The Managing Director of NLB, Mr Wong Leung Pak (黃良柏), confirmed at the Traffic and Transport Committee of the Islands District Council on 17 March 2008 that the route was losing HK$3–4 million a year.[22]

According to Bus Route Planning Programme and other documents, the ridership of this route is as follows:

  • 2008: There were 190 passengers travelling to and from the airport daily, which means that there are only five passengers on each bus.
  • 2018: The total patronage of the nine "A Routes" franchised bus routes including this route, A11, A21, A22, A29, A31, A33X, A36, and A41, was 910,000 passenger trips (September); 1.103 million (October); and 1.383 million (November).[23]
  • 2020: The occupancy rate during the busiest hour was 64%.[24]

Related Incidents[]

  • 16 November 2008: About 100 residents of South Lantau, assisted by several district councillors, drove 60 vehicles slowly on the Airport Island to protest against the Transport Department and NLB's forced reduction of the headways of this route from the original 38 trips per day to 10 trips per day. NLB responded that this route was incurring an annual loss of $5 million and said that if the New Tung Chung Road was completed, this route would be cancelled in order to reduce the loss, but NLB had not cancelled this route after the completion of the New Tung Chung Road.[5]
