Hong Kong Buses Wiki

The North Lantau Bus Route 36 is operated by New Lantao Bus (NLB). It runs between Tung Chung Tat Tung Road and Disneyland, via Pak Mong Village and Siu Ho Wan, which is the sole public transport service that runs through the whole of Cheung Tung Road with stops en-route. However, the demand along the route is not great and the frequency is very sparse.

In terms of District Council boundaries, Sham Fung Road and its subsequent roads to the east belong to Tsuen Wan District, making Route 36 a de facto cross-district route. Together with its branch routes, Routes 36M and 36X, and KMB Routes 36, 36M and 36X, which also serve the Tsuen Wan District, these routes are the only three sets of routes in Hong Kong that have more than one different bus route with the same numbering within the same administrative district, and are operated by different franchised bus companies.[Remark 1]

History[]

  • 27 January 1998: Route 36 entered service, running circular between Tung Chung Town Centre and Siu Ho Wan to serve passengers at Pak Mong and Siu Ho Wan.
    • At the time of its inception, this route was the only bus route passing through Cheung Tung Road. It was only after the commissioning of Discovery Bay Tunnel and the introduction of DBTSL Routes DB01R and DB02R that the situation was changed, but so far, it is still the only route with stops on Cheung Tung Road.
  • 5 December 2004: A $2.0 Octopus interchange concession with MTR Tung Chung Line on Sundays and Public Holidays was introduced until 27 Februaryof the following year.
  • 21 August 2005: New departures at 12:15 and 18:00 were added with the cancellation of Route 36P.[1]
  • 7 January 2006: The 18:00 departure was cancelled due to extremely low ridership.[2]
  • 2 November 2013: The "Tung Chung Crescent" bus stop on Shun Tung Road was cancelled due to low utilisation rate.
  • 16 January 2014: A new departure at 17:15 on Mondays to Saturdays from Tung Chung was added.
  • 20 April 2015: The Tung Chung terminus was relocated to Tung Chung Temporary Bus Terminus due to the reconstruction of the Tung Chung Town Centre Bus Terminus into Citygate Phase II.[3] Meanwhile, circular operation was cancelled and a terminus was set up outside Siu Ho Wan Vehicle Detention Pound at Sham Fung Road.[4]
  • 31 December 2017: Estimated Time of Bus Arrival Enquiry Service (ETA) enquiry service was introduced to this route. [5]
  • 29 June 2020: A new 14:30 departure from Tung Chung Station and 14:43 departure from Siu Ho Wan on Mondays to Saturdays was added, same as that during holidays.[6]
  • 30 April 2021: The "Pak Mong Village" bus stop for Tung Chung direction was relocated from Cheung Tung Road to Pak Mong access road.[7][8]
  • 20 December 2021: Extended from Siu Ho Wan to Disneyland:[9][10]
    • For Disneyland direction, the route would run via Cheung Tung Road, Sunny Bay Road, Magic Road and Fantasy Road to the terminus;
    • For Tung Chung direction, the route would run via Fantasy Road, Magic Road, Sunny Bay Road and Cheung Tung Road back to Sham Fung Road and original routing;
    • The 17:15 departure on Mondays to Saturdays was changed to depart at 16:45;
    • Departures to Tung Chung are revised to 08:20, 10:35, 15:05, 17:20 and 20:05 from Mondays to Saturdays, and from Disneyland at 08:20, 10:35, 15:05, 17:50 and 20:05 on Sundays and Public Holidays, with a special departure from Siu Ho Wan at 07:58 from Mondays to Saturdays;
    • The full fare was increased to $9.8, while the fare of the original section remained unchanged.
  • 1 November 2023: Octopus interchange concessions with Long Win Bus (LWB) "E" routes (except routes E37C and E42C) were introduced.[11][12]

Ridership[]

At present, the resident population along Route 36 is very small, with only villages in the Pak Mong area. Even though there are industrial facilities such as bus depots of Citybus and Long Win Bus, as well as a government maintenance depot, a vehicle detention pound and a water treatment works in the vicinity of Siu Ho Wan, the bus companies and government departments have arranged their own staff shuttle buses and government vehicles to take their staff to and from work, so staff do not have to take public transport on their own to go there. However, there is a hiking trail to Mui Wo, the Tung Mui Ancient Trail (also known as the Olympic Trail), near Pak Mong Village, which is popular among hikers during holidays.

According to the Bus Route Planning Programmes and other documents, the ridership of this route is as follows:

  • 2006: There were only 3-6 passengers per departure on average, and an annual loss of HK$100,000 was recorded.[15]
  • 2020: The occupancy rate of the 14:30 departure from Tung Chung was lower than 10%.[16]
  • 2021: The occupancy rate during the peakiest hour was 7%.
