The North-South Lantau Recreation Bus Route 1R is operated by New Lantao Bus (NLB). It operates one-way from Hung Hom (Hung Luen Road) to Ngong Ping, providing service only on Sundays and public holidays.

This route only calls at a few intermediate stops at Kowloon and only stopping at "Tong Fuk Village" stop at Lantau Island; it is the first route of the company with one of the termini not inside Lantau Island, and is also the only route connecting urban Kowloon and South Lantau.

History[]

  • 24 January 2001: Route 1R was put into service, there were three trips at 08:00, 09:00 and 10:00 every Sundays and Public Holidays from Hung Hom Ferry Concourse, which heads directly to Lantau non-stop via Argyle Street and Cherry Street after departing from Nathan Road.[1]
  • 11 February 2001: Changed to depart at 09:00, 10:00 and 11:00 from Hung Hom Ferry Concourse.[2]
  • 20 May 2001: New departures were added at 09:30 and 10:30, making it a total of five trips.
  • Early 2002: Increased to eight trips (every 15 minutes between 09:00 and 10:30, and at 11:00).
  • 1 May 2003: Detoured via Sham Shui Po District and intermediate stops were added along Cheung Sha Wan Road.[3]
  • 17 August 2008: Due to the opening of Ngong Ping 360, the patronage dropped significantly and the departures at 09:15, 09:45 and 10:15 were cancelled from that day onwards.[4]
  • 8 February 2009: Diverted to a new section of Tung Chung Road between Pak Kung Au and San Shek Wan to tie in with the completion of the Tung Chung Road Improvement Project.
  • 19 March 2015: The route category was re-assigned from "North-South Lantau Ngong Ping Bus Route" to "North-South Lantau Recreation Bus Route".[5]
  • 20 April 2015: No longer passed through Tung Chung Town Centre and re-routed via Tung Chung Temporary Bus Terminus to tie in with the redevelopment of Tung Chung Town Centre Bus Terminus.[6]
  • 23 July 2017: Reduced to three trips.[7]
  • 31 December 2017: Estimated Time of Bus Arrival Enquiry Service (ETA) enquiry service was introduced to this route. [8]
  • 12 January 2019: Hung Hom Ferry terminus was relocated to Hung Hom (Hung Luen Road) Public Transport Interchange and departed from the new terminus via Hung Luen Road instead of Wa Shun Street.[9][10]
  • 10 March 2022: Service was suspended due to the fifth wave of the novel coronavirus pneumonia outbreak until 21 April when service was resumed.[11]

Fare Remarks
  • Half-fare for children aged below 12 and senior citizens aged 65 or above; the remainder of the fare after half-fare will be counted as 10 cents.
  • Elderly persons aged 65 or above using Senior Octopus Cards or Personalised Octopus cards, Hong Kong residents aged 60 to 64 using JoyYou Card, and eligible persons with disabilities using Personalised Octopus cards with "Persons with Disabilities Status" can enjoy a flat fare of $2.0 per journey under the $2 Concessionary Fare. If the concessionary fare for eligible persons with disabilities aged below 12 and senior citizens aged 65 or above is less than $2.0 after a 50% discount from the regular fare, the beneficiary is only required to pay the original concessionary fare; if the original full fare for Hong Kong residents aged 60 to 64 or eligible persons with disabilities is already less than $2.0, the beneficiary is also only required to pay the original full fare.
  • Passengers are required to tender exact fare by cash or by Octopus card when boarding. No exact change will be given.
  • Passengers can use AlipayHK "EasyGo" and WeChat QR Code Payment to pay the fares. Passengers using this form of payment cannot enjoy the "Public Transport Fare Subsidy" nor the "Public Transport Fare Concession Scheme for the Elderly and Eligible Persons with Disabilities".
  • "Lantau Pass" is not applicable to this route.

As this route passes through the Low Emission Zone for Franchised Buses, vehicles on this route must meet Euro V emission standards or above unless under special vehicle dispatchment changes.

Despite this route terminates at Ngong Ping Public Transport Interchange according to the official information, in actual operations, most bus captains choose to clear all passengers at "Ngong Ping Village" alighting stop outside the terminus same as that of Route 23.

  • 2017: The ridership within Kowloon urban area remained low and there was an average of 15 passengers each trip before arriving at Tung Chung Town Centre.
