The North-South Lantau Ordinary Bus Route 11[Remark 1] is operated by New Lantao Bus (NLB). It runs between Tung Chung Station Bus Terminus and Tai O, via Pak Kung Au, San Shek Wan, Cheung Sha, Tong Fuk, Shui Hau, Shek Pik and Keung Shan.

NLB also operates a non-stop North-South Lantau Special Bus Route 11S which can be chartered for group charters or provided on special demand. Since the Transport Department (TD) started to allow other coaches to travel to and from South Lantau via Tung Chung Road in 2009, the demand for hiring NLB has dropped drastically, and buses on the route are now deployed only on special occasions.

History[]

Summary of changes[]

  • 6 February 2009: The improved Tung Chung Road was opened to traffic at 10:00 a.m. on the same day, with both directions diverted to the new section of Tung Chung Road between Pak Kung Au and San Shek Wan. [1]
  • 4 August 2021: The departure from Tung Chung Station Bus Terminus at 06:45 on Mondays to Saturdays was detoured via Tong Fuk Correctional Institution.

Detailed history[]

Detailed history of NLB Route 11
  • 22 May 1997: Route 11 was launched in conjunction with the opening of Lantau Link, running between Tung Chung Town Centre and Tai O, witjh similar routings with Route 6 between 1979 and 1980s.
    • NLB also has a non-stop special trip numbered "11S", which is provided according to passenger demand. [4]
  • 21 May 2001: Route 31 was cancelled and merged into this route. As that route provided non-air-conditioned service, it means that non-air-conditioned buses joined this route.
  • 27 August 2003: Upgraded to full air-conditioned service, with full fares lowered.
  • 5 December 2004 to 27 May 2005: A $2.0 Octopus interchange concession with Tung Chung Line on Sundays and public holidays was introduced during the period.
  • 6 June 2005: Full fare was reduced to tie in with the conversion of Route 1 to full air-conditioned service.[5]
  • 16 November 2008: Service was enhanced in accordance with the service reduction of Route A35 and buses with luggage facilities were additionally deployed on this route.
  • 26 February 2009: With effect from 9:15 am, buses on both bounds were diverted to the new section of Tung Chung Road between Pak Kung Au and San Shek Wan, instead of the old section of South Lantau Road in Cheung Sha, to tie in with the opening of the new and improved Tung Chung Road to traffic from 10:00a.m. onwards; also, a new "Ride 8 Get One Free" concession to replenish the fare difference between this route and the original Cheung Sha section of Route 3M.[1]
  • 2 November 2013: The bus stop on Shun Tung Road "Tung Chung Crescent" on Shun Tung Road was cancelled due to low utilisation.
  • 27 July 2014: Special departures via Sha Tsui Correctional Institution were changed to only weekday service and holiday services were provided by Route 11A instead.[6]
  • 20 April 2015: The Tung Chung Town Centre Bus Terminus stop was temporarily cancelled and relocated to Tung Chung Temporary Bus Terminus due to the Citygate expansion project.[7]
  • 16 July 2015: Some trips were detoured via North Lantau Hospital. [8]
  • 7 September 2015: The following changes were made for some trips: [9]
    • The departure at 08:00 on Sundays and public holidays were detoured via Tong Fuk Correctional Institution;

  • 9 October 2017: The first bus time from Tai O was advanced to 05:15. [10]
  • 1 March 2017: Estimated Time of Bus Arrival Enquiry Service (ETA) enquiry service was introduced to this route.[11]
  • 1 February 2018: [12][13]
    • The departure at 10:05 on Mondays to Saturdays was detoured via Sha Tsui Correctional Institution;
    • The departure at 07:20 on Monday to Friday school days from Shui Hau was changed to depart at 07:10 from Sha Tsui Correctional Institution.
  • 27 April 2019: Tung Chung Terminus was relocated back to Tung Chung Town Centre to coincide with the completion of the stop's redevelopment.[14]
  • * 8 May 2021: Octopus interchange concessions with Long Win Bus (LWB) "E Routes" (North Lantau External Routes) were introduced for a six-month trial basis.[15]

NLB 11 Exchange Voucher

Route 11 ride exchange voucher (weekdays) adult ticket sample. This old version of the ticket has been invalidated since July 2016.

  • Since the rerouting of Tung Chung Road since 6 February 2009, the intersection between Tung Chung Road and South Lantau Road has moved east from "Cheung Sha Bridge" to "San Shek Wan Roundabout", causing Route 3M no longer calling at stops between them on the Cheung Sha section of South Lantau Road. As replacement services (such as Routes 11, 23) is higher than that of Route 3M, therefore NLB launched a "Ride 8 Get One Free concession" so that the passengers in the affected areas can travel to and from Tung Chung at a similar fare. Passengers can get a free ride exchange voucher from bus captain while alighting at Cheung Sha area from Tung Chung Town Centre to Tai O, however dual-door buses and supporting buses from Kwoon Chung Bus may not be able to provide such ride exchange vouchers. Passengers can get the free ride voucher for this route at NLB's regulator's office at Tung Chung Town Centre or Mui Wo Office after collecting 8 same ride exchange vouchers. Passengers can travel on Route 11 for free on weekdays and holidays by tendering the free ride voucher into the coin box in lieu of fares.
  • From 14 April 2014 (notice issued on 10 April 2014), the redemption times for ride vouchers have been changed to only 8:30am to 6:30pm on weekdays at Tung Chung Bus Terminus. From 20 May 2016, the new ride exchange vouchers and free ride vouchers began to be distributed with both vouchers applicable only on weekdays, whereas the old version of ride exchange vouchers and free ride vouchers were still valid until 30 June of the same year. The applicablity of ride vouchers were again resumed to both weekdays and holidays on 20 January 2020.

Ridership[]

There is another ferry service connecting Tai O to Tung Chung, but its frequency is sparse and its capacity is limited [Remark 2]. As a result, NLB has to provide Tung Chung bound service from the Sha Tsui Correctional Institution (or Route 11A during weekends) to divert the waiting passengers along South Lantau Road.

In June 2021, Transport Department submitted a paper to the Traffic and Transport Committee of the Tuen Mun District stating that the results of the latest field survey conducted at Tai O Bus Terminus on a Sunday showed that NLB had been operating additional trips throughout the day in response to passenger demand. Among them, during the peak period from 5:00 pm to 7:30 pm, NLB operated 33 additional trips over the schedule of services, and the average waiting time of passengers was about two minutes, indicating that the existing service could generally meet passenger demand.[19]

Related Incidents[]

  • 21 October 2002: At about 7:00 a.m., an Isuzu bus heading towards Tung Chung was travelling uphill along Tung Chung Road when, due to rainy weather and slippery road conditions, it collided head-on with an Isuzu bus travelling on Route 3M on the opposite side of the road, resulting in injuries to the two bus captains and four passengers.[20]
  • 26 January 2003: At about 10:00 a.m., an Isuzu MT112L single-decker bus (ILS60/FY9225) heading for Tung Chung lost control of its vehicle while descending from Keung Shan Road and fell about 5 metres downhill, injuring 10 people. The bus was subsequently withdrawn from service in 2004.[21]
  • 6 April 2015: At about 2:00 pm, a Tai O-bound Kwoon Chung Bus Sunlong SLK6112LY (SN3600) lost control and ran down a hillside beside the taxi stand at the San Shek Wan Roundabout, with the vehicle bottom stuck on the roadside. 55 passengers on board were not injured, while the driver sustained a back injury.[22][23]
